Going to sort out a new phone this week and looking at the offers they start to add on Insurance as an extra, now i did take out ins on daughters phone (glad i did as it got stolen at school!) but what do other EduGeekers do for thier own phones, buy it or just take the risk. Only ever dropped and broken one so far so just wondering if its really worth it, or haveI answered my own question? Thanks to those who offered suggestions as to whast phone previously, think I'll be looking for the HTC Desire, seems to tick all the right boxes.

I have phone insurance through my bank account at no additional cost. If you have a history of being a careful owner then you're unlikely to need it. But there is always the chance of it being stolen so it's a worth-while thing to have, because they aren't very cheap to replace out of your own pocket.

Good choice on the HTC Desire :)

I have never needed it, but with these long contracts 18 - 24 months it might be worth it. My friend has had a ton of problems with his current phone, the thought of dropping it into a pint and getting a new one would have appealed.

I have saved around £1K over the past 10 years by not having insurance.

Phones 4 you are trying to say that you are buying the contract and the phone is free and therefore not covered by a guarantee (I would love to see this tested in court as it is the worst sort of male cow solid waste).

I'm the same as Webman, my bank account came with it as a perk. I've never needed it though, as any small repairs needed are nearly always under the price of the excess. When I did have insurance, the excess was £50 on it, so when I broke the screen somehow, it would have ended up costing more to fix it via insurance than by myself.

I've got insurance with orange for my desire, at £6/month it provides a little extra peace of mind. Plus if it does die for whatever reason I get a new one (well reconditioned) the next day.

My mobile is covered by the house insurance. Not many people realise that they are also covered. Might be worth checking your policy.

Another one for "it's covered by the bank account perks" but previous to that, I just took the risk really.

As sippo said though, household insurance policies are sometimes covering the goods, the only issue here though is unless it's a specific clause you could find you have a hefty excess to pay, where as phone insurance, the excess is more manageable, but it's worth checking out before you shell out.

Your phone might be covered but the cost of any calls may not be.

Never bothered with mine, and I refuse to pay Natwest £7 a month or whatever it is for having a fancy premier account as I feel that I give them enough business anyway.

As I buy my handsets Sim Free (I'm a Pay-As-You-Go User!!!) its not as easy to get insurance on them.

Never had it, never will. I'll save the 6 quid a month and if I lose or smash my phone I'll just get blinding drunk on the money I've saved:drunken_smilie:

I've never bothered with it, never needed it, I've always usually had a fairly cheap phone so if I do lose it, it's not the end of the world. Saying that though, I've never lost one nor had one stolen even when I was at school when mobiles were fairly new as I tend to keep my phone on me at all times.
