IP CCTV - Any model recomendations and would you go wireless?

Hi all

 

I'm are looking at putting some IP CCTV camera's in our computer suites and were wondering if anyone had any recomendations?

 

I could do with something that will give a fairly good wide angle to cover the whole room but are also detailed enough to indentify people if needed. I also need the ability to schedule recordings so I can playback to times of interest

 

Also, I'm are looking at wireless IP as an option but have some concern over bandwith use. Basically the areas that these cameras are located would potentially share an access point with up to 20 laptops and I wondered if anyone has used these on a wireless basis and how bandwidth heavy you have found them?

We use Axis 216FD POE cameras here. Expensive but great quality. Software was expensive and hardware intensive, so we created our own lightweight app that just starts and stops recording MP4 stream at specific times.

Never tried wireless, so can't comment on that.

I've had some demos of the Mobotix cameras from Net-Ctrl (they're an EG sponsor as well ) and I've seen them in action at BETT and they seem like great cameras. The 360 degree view camera is a great idea as well

Don't know about the cameras, but what about ZoneMinder: Linux Home CCTV and Video Camera Security with Motion Detection for the software?

I am trialling some Axis cameras at the moment and also using an axis single port video server to demonstrate the ability to convert our analogue system to ip.

From our experience, if you are introducing a lot of fairly decent res CCTV - I'd advise putting them on a discrete network if you can - the 20-odd we have here really yomp up the bandwidth!

Mobotix cameras here they are very good. Had police comment how good they are. Did show the footage from cameras used in store that was bombed.

After the conference I too am an advocate of Mobotix now they are just brilliant, I just need to get the funding and get one or two in to start the ball rolling. Our existing external CCTV is coming up for 10 years old in the oldest areas so no doubt will start playing up and need replacing and upgrading and those are the beasts I think

Mobotix cameras are superb, but you also might like to consider the great price/performance that Axis are delivering with their latest HD IP cameras - check these YouTube clips:

Each video clip is only about 20-30 seconds - be sure to watch in HD & expand the playback view window.

The Mobotix camera you should look at is the Q24, which is a 360 degree hemispheric camera. One camera should cover your whole IT suite. Viewing and recording software is free and the camera is powered by PoE. We have units available for evaluation.
