I've just been looking at PC World's site and they have started to advertise Vista on pre order. The prices are as follows -

Home Basic - £179.99

Home Premium - £219.99

Business - £289.99

Ultimate - £369.99

Good to see M$ are trying to stamp out pirating by their affordable pricing! :roll:

Steep prices indeed, thankfully the vista I will be using at home wont cost me a penny, I really think that MS should revisit those prices

They're probably looking at including the cost of all the holdups and delays, and are going to have to filter that cost down to the consumer.

 

They know, even we do, that the clueless will flock to vista without even knowing what it is, once pc world starts their push on it, it'll fly off the shelves.

 

I will admit, the desktop etc seems to be a lot easier to keep organised and it has lots of nice features, but i sure won't be migrating for AT LEAST 12-18 months.

Remember thats retail boxed pricing so its a little more than Windows XP costs today (probably will drop down in time.)

 

i.e

 

Windows XP Home £199inc > Vista Home Basic £179inc

Windows XP Pro £245inc > Vista Business £289inc

 

and who buys retail boxed anyway get an oem copy and buy a floppy drive its much cheaper :D

 

I do agree that Home Premium should be the price that XP home is at the moment and Vista basic should be really cheap say £30.00 (oem) £100 (retail) as the os pricing is now very much a large part of the pc cost.

Darren and I are taking part in a project with Microsoft to do a trial roll out of Vista and Office 2007 to a handfull of machines. I am doing it to 20 laptops used by VIth formers in the library and I think Darren is doing it to a classroom of 30.

 

I have part of the build ready now (and will be taking it home to do the rest ... plenty of OSS to go on really) and it is very nice. Yes, there are some things that might take some tweaking, and I haven't even started to look at managing it on the domain yet (trying to work out using admx/adml stuff considering we only have 2 other Vista machines in the school to manage it all with ... mine and Stephen's) and that is not even starting with the issues with older education software ...

 

I won't be posting the stuff on here as we go along as it is for a report for Microsoft, but I will be asking what others think from time to time.

On our extremely brief test so far there seems to be no difference at all to the end user. In XP there were the multimedia enhancements over the business-like 2000 at least.

Not likely ... we don't let RM anywhere near the school ... oh .. you mean running Windows?

 

Let's face it ... it is nice to be given a chance to get a headstart for a change instead of playing catch up ... and the UK Edu Team are a good bunch who have been very helpful to the EduGeek cause over the last year.

 

Unfortunately there are other things I would like to pilot but Apple's Edu structure in europe at the moment is based on having Apple Solution Experts ... they rely on them to do interesting things with schools, and whilst there are a few that really want to do similar projects with us there is little backing further up the chain in Apple, whereas Microsoft are seriously supportive.

 

I know ... it is hard to believe I am saying that this is one area Microsoft truly are coming on top with, but it is true ...

 

The master machine now has Vista on, Office 2007 and Adobe 8 ... I am about to load on the Microsoft Learning Essentials pack.

 

Starting to look at other applications to put on there ... I am not going to stick Open Office or Firefos yet ... I want the VIth form to try using as much of Office and Vista as they can ... get them used to IE7 ...

 

Off to look at the vista compatibles list further down the forum.

wow has anyone seen office 2007 got a look at the beta 2 it is good better and it is the first time i would say its worth updating to it has actually changed advanced fetures are not hidden and are simple to use also the outlook attchement preveiw feature is really good. looks like they have at last got there S$££ int one sock when it comes to office but i will have to see the final relise first.

the £30.50 is under the SSAT Select Agreement IIRC ... it should be a little more if you are not a specialist school, unless you have a seperate arrangement, in which case it might be slightly cheaper ...

 

Please contact your account manager for a definitive price, and if in doubt check with the Microsoft Edu Licencing team to check on your requirements before you speak to your account manager.

Hi,

 

Oh yeah i forgot to check the Ramesys site, we used them for most of the license purchase :), the pugh website is the first one come to mind so i quoted them directly there.

 

Tony is right it is slighly cheaper if you are spealist school.
