AnnDroyd Posted May 11, 2010 Posted May 11, 2010 Can anyone reccommend any good backup software that's compatible with Server 2008, Exchange an SQL? We currently use Symantec Backup Exec 11d, but the cost of upgrading to the latest version in order to be compatible with Server 2008 is prohibitive. NTBackup would have been fine, but Microsoft appear to have decided to remove it!
elsiegee40 Posted May 11, 2010 Posted May 11, 2010 I think this is what you need: Karl Foley's Blog : How-to Backup Exchange 2007 on Server 2008 After all the hassle of getting Exchange 2007 setup yesterday, I found that I had no way to backup my Exchange 2007 server running on Server 2008. For whatever reason, Microsoft do not supply NTBackup and there is no in-built way of backing up Exchange 2007 when run on Server 2008. Now, I could opt for a third party backup program or use Microsoft DPM, but for my 4 user network, this is a little bit of an overkill. After some research, I found this article on how to install NTBackup...
sted Posted May 11, 2010 Posted May 11, 2010 have a look at macrium reflect it does 2008 r2 ok but no idea about exchange
adamf Posted May 11, 2010 Posted May 11, 2010 Have you looked at MS Data Protection Manager? Resonabbly priced for education customers, is compatible with Exchange and SQL, I think it's very good for d-d backups, not so good for d-d-t backups - the 2010 version has recently gone RTM which you'll need if your installing it on or backuping up servers with W2K8 R2
EduTech Posted May 11, 2010 Posted May 11, 2010 I would recommend looking at MS Data Protection Manager, How much is it going to set you back to renew backup exec? James.
AnnDroyd Posted May 12, 2010 Author Posted May 12, 2010 Upgrading to the latest version of Backup Exec would cost us around £1200. It's not huge sums of money but it is a lot when it's something you hadn't planned for.
AIT Posted May 12, 2010 Posted May 12, 2010 Acronis. Echo Enterprise server. By far the best backup software i have ever used.
bossman Posted May 12, 2010 Posted May 12, 2010 @jwoods: I would agree with AIT but will also be expensive, another approach would be "Yosemite" which may let you convert your existing BE plus a small fee for an unlimited client installation which would be around half what you would pay for BE upgrade. BarracudaWare / Yosemite Technologies It states $1400 around £1150 here but I am sure there might be deals to be had from resellers in this country. I do know that Sylv3r has been using it as he also has BE so why not PM him and ask him.
EduTech Posted May 12, 2010 Posted May 12, 2010 I used the Acronis Software when i was looking for a backup solution and to be honest it was flakey, didn't go down well and it did not do that SharePoint Granular Backup which is something i needed, Backup Exec on the other hand did that with no problems I suppose if the cost of purchasing a new peice of software and renewing backup exec is not much i would stay with backup exec so you dont have to change, unless you find a free/cheap solution but just make sure that it does everything you want as the last thing you want is the backups not working.. at least if they work now and there are no problems you in the green zone. How much data do you have to backup? have you looked at maybe doing a remote backup? You can transfer a copy of your current data, put that in the remote location and then the changes are sent over the Internet because things like documents etc are so small the transfer is not an issue. Exchange Mailboxes, User Data Etc. would be backed up, and also meats any DPA requirments for backing up your MIS Data Remotley as 9/10 the remote backups are encryptyed
johnnyboyclub Posted May 12, 2010 Posted May 12, 2010 You can use a software i am using since 2 years ago , it is pretty good and it also make a online backup for more security, you can find them here : Dmailer Backup - Free PC/Mac Backup Software + 2GB Free Online Storage Cheers
flyinghaggis Posted May 12, 2010 Posted May 12, 2010 I would recommend looking at MS Data Protection Manager, How much is it going to set you back to renew backup exec? James. +1 Backup Exec is too expensive as a realistic option for schools IMO. Especially when you have to shell out for an upgraded Backup Exec lic everytime MS bring out a new version of exchange/SQL/HyperV/etc. Buy DPM on a volume licence (which will be a fraction of the cost of Backup Exec ) and then you can rest assured you'll be covered whatever MS bring out in future. At least then you'll never again be in the position you're in now where you need to stump up £1000's for upgraded licences all at once.
geek12 Posted June 24, 2010 Posted June 24, 2010 Can anyone reccommend any good backup software that's compatible with Server 2008, Exchange an SQL? I recommend Handy Backup Server. It's a complete corporate backup solution for Windows-based networks. You can perform backup for Server, Exchange, SQL, Databases and so on. Handy Backup 6.7 - Data Backup to DVD, CD, FTP, Network, Online. Enterprise Backup Software

We have an unlimited license here so can use it on all our Virtual Servers. You can get exchange and sql licenses for it. We opted against the sql license. I have a script that backs up the SQL database to a local folder every day and then Yosemite backups the local backup folder as normal
khugg Posted July 30, 2010 Posted July 30, 2010 I switched from Backup Exec to Unitrends backup appliance. There are no license fees and I have been extremely pleased the user interface.
Stuart_C Posted July 30, 2010 Posted July 30, 2010 I'm currently using Acronis to back up to disk. If I'm honest it's OK. It does the job, the downside is it that browsing through the backup file takes a while. The only "Complaint" I have is that I can't join my NAS to my domain so I have to specify the usernam and password to access it in the Acronis job. This is a problem because EVERY time I make a config changes it defaults back to the network account used to create the job/access the files and I have to remember to re-enter teh details (which are hidden on an advanced menu!!!)
