Can anyone recommend me a nas box to be used for vmware storage mostly iscsi targets for doc's and maybe the odd virtual machine but isn't going to cost me the earth.

For docs? As in all your user files? Dont go cheap, you'll regret it. For iSCSI to work effectively you need lots of ram and fast disks, and preferably an SSD in there too if you are going to be hammering it.

Going to be used to archive data off mainly.

If it could run basic virtual machines that would be nice. Not really going to hammer it as such. Also a couple of vmdks that don't get hammered.

I've been using a couple of Thecus i4500's with VMware. They hold a few not too critical Guests and are otherwise used to hold disk backup copies of VM Guests. The i4500's have dual GB Nic's and a 100MB nic for management. They also come with dual power supplies. For the price, I've been delighted with them.

We use Fujitsu Eternus DX 90 - ETERNUS DX90

There are lower models avaialable as this is currently the "King" of the Eternus range.

All in all they are good, resonably prices and easy to install and manage, they come with iSCSI and Fibre Attaches, also if you ever have any disk or controller failures, fujitsu support is excellent I find for swapping out components next or even same day.

Any idea what your budget is? If you're talking iSCSI then you want a SAN (block-level) rather than a NAS (file-level). The Sun/Oracle S7000 Open Storage stuff is excellent if it's in your price range and includes all the protocols you should need for VMware (NFS + iSCSI) and will also do CIFS (Windows shares) if you want your users to talk directly to it. SATA disk storage for capacity with SSD flash accelerators for performance.

Cheers,

Chris

Sorry to pick fault but if its serving iscsi it will not use any ram what so ever...

If its serving nas then it will use ram and lots of it will seriously increase speed.

Erm, actually our SANs (running nexenta) are complaining about low RAM.

It may be if you use a hardware HBA for iSCSI, then RAM isn't an issue, but the SAN will still have an OS (of sorts) and often the use RAM for cache (like nexenta).

You ought to look at the S7000. awesome for VM's, fielserving, AD, and all the good stuff you need / want. Ask fellow edugeekers about how good it is...

Cheers,

Waiting for that beating :)

You let all the cricketers use them the other day Mr T ;)

Another vote for the S7000 stuff :) I'm using bats to beat our finance people up to get the cash for more shiny boxes :)
