Hello all,

i'm new to this site so here goes.

At the moment i have sky+ at home and a standard sky box in my caravan. When i visit my caravan i take my white sky+ card and i can get all the chanels i get at home.

My question is ,if i subscribe to sky HD can i still use my original sky+ box in my caravan with all its sky+ functions providing i change to a two chanel LNB and run the extra cable with the sky card i have at the moment.

Thanks,

Mel

you cant use the full features of the sky plus. You can only record one program and whilst doing so, you cannot change channel. My brother is a former sky engineer (Was recently laid off) and he set this up for my mum who does a lot of caravanning.

Plus, when you get a new card, you will no longer be able to swap it between boxes.

We always used to take our card round to our friends to watch football etc on the channels that they didn't receive. However, recently had to have our card replaced, and this no longer works. The Sky engineer that came out for something different said that they're starting to lock individual cards to individual sky boxes.

Even with a dual LNB and dual cable run as proposed?

Right to clarify, sky digital has always paired the card to the box. This means you cant move your card onto a different sky box without calling sky.

The only exception to this rule I believe is when you get a new sky box, since your using the same card it will work on both but I do *believe* sky can/do send a cancel signal to the old box but if the box is off when its sent out it does not get deactivated and the signal is never resent.

If you got Sky HD I think you could possibly continue to use your sky+ box in your caravan as long as it never gets the clear flag and also as long as sky dont have fundimentaly different card data for the 2 (aka it says Sky HD rather then enabling Sky+ & Sky HD) but there is no way to tell that as it were. Its also possibly for Sky to introduce the pairing info to be stored on the card which would allow reseting as well.

slightly OT but here goes. has anybody on here managed to get recorded programs off their sky + / sky+hd boxes? to a pc?

The videos are generally stored encryted so you cant easily get the data as such. The disks are just FAT32 formatted I believe and I think you can move programs from one disk to another as long as you only try to watch them on a sky box.

The recordings are stored encrypted and your card needs to be valid for that channel in order to watch it I think, thus if you recorded some movies and then cancelled your movies sub then you wouldn't be able to watch them.

Completely correct yes, the data stored on the hard disk is exactly the same near enough as what is sent down from the satellite.

Aye cards are now locked to boxes for "premium channels", so that's Sports and Movies. AFAIK it still works for normal packages.

I used to take my Sky card over to my Dads on a Sunday to watch the football, now I just take the whole damn box!

can anyone advise me about the possibility of getting a pvr to record a sky channel when i'm out please?

Any PVR that can record analogue tv will work (note it probably wont change channels) as you use the ariel output on the sky box to connect to it. This wont probably record box office etc as they usually have macrovision though. Before I got sky hd I used to use my analogue tuner in my pc to record and change sky channels.

I'm with cable but the digital programme guide permits programme reminders which changes the channel for you when the programme starts; I should imagine Sky have it too? You can then connect your pvr to record on the line in (at the times you wish to record) and just set reminders on the sky box?
