Anyone use Selectamark?

If so, need some help! Especially if you have iMacs.

 

We've got some new ones, and unlike previous models there is literally no plastic so we'll have to mark on the aluminium. The usual blue plastic marking compound doesnt stick to the metal (fair enough really, it isnt meant to) so all it leaves is a very faint outline that can be pretty much rubbed off.

 

So tried using the very runny red aluminium marking compound, but as well as dripping everywhere, this stuff never seems to dry! How long are you supposed to leave it? It does leave a good mark but it comes off when you touch it.

I've used this at home - I tried to security etch a Sony PRS-505 Reader which is aluminium and it just rubbed off no matter how long I left it.

I got some of the specific SelectaMark Aluminium Compound with black caps from SelectaMark to mark Imacs and have had no problem.

hmm we have some of this in our new batch, i hope it dont do what you 2 are saying it does!! be sending it back if soo.. lol

hmm well ill just have to leave it overnight and see if it dries then...the black cap stuff is what we have (though it is probably about 3 years old)

Yeah, I think that was possibly my problem - the stuff wasn't new and I wondered if it had degraded even though the little tube of stuff hadn't been opened.

I haven't used the black aluminium marker yet, so I don't know how runny it should be - but you won't be able to apply it to painted surfaces, it has to cut into the bare metal. You might have to prime them with some metal paper first.

Does your DT department have a laser cutter? We use one to mark our laptops, much neater then selectamark, I'm not sure if it'll work with alu, but it's worth a try.

So thats why we had to have an A2 Laser Cutter it was to save me engraving / UV Penning and Smart Watering all my IT Hardware, well I knew we spent £14000 on if for something useful All i've seen come out of it are rulers and key tags so far.....

 

Anyway back to Selectamark.... I found it VERY over-priced and over-rated, I've got some solvent here at home that takes the blue stuff off no problems you'd never know it was on I love my Avery industrial cleaning stuff its great

You should also consider a Security Marker Pen. This should work on any surface.

Yeah we have a laser cutter...but Im not sure how I'd get a 27" iMac in it...lol

We stopped using Selectamark a few years back when it stopped sticking to the latest batch of RM's PCs, I'm guessing something to do with the anti-graffiti coating. We use sticky labels from Seton now, much neater and significantly cleaner and quicker to apply.
