doofusdog Posted March 5, 2010 Posted March 5, 2010 Hi, I want to glue 20 USB hubs to either the plastic monitor base, the top of the computer or maybe to the desk.. Anyone recommend a glue? I'm thinking fast epoxy glue, the sort that comes in two tubes. I just want the students to be unable to take them away.. Ta Craig
SYNACK Posted March 5, 2010 Posted March 5, 2010 I'd probably just go for generic super glue as it sticks well to everything. The main thing though is to clean the surfaces you want to stick together with something like isopropyl alchohol to get all the oil and chemicals off it so you get a good strong bond. Depending on how much free space there is inside the hub itself it may be easier to simply drill a few holes in it (avoiding the PCB) and ram some wood screws through each one with square head tops or simmilar down into the desk. This would make it easier for you to remove one at a later date if one breaks and needs replacing.
Andrew_C Posted March 5, 2010 Posted March 5, 2010 I'd go for screws too. I'm not a huge fan of "superglue"; I've found too many surfaces that it doesn't stick well. Particularly textured finishes. Gripfill would be a possibility, fills gaps well, but it honks a bit. Well ventilated room and all that.
Jay_Jay Posted March 5, 2010 Posted March 5, 2010 Some strong glues can eat in to the plastic, how about using something like adhesive pads like the one's people use to stick number plates on cars, they are extremely strong.
RinSewand Posted March 5, 2010 Posted March 5, 2010 I've found superglue can be fairly easy to break, if this is for a security reason - I'd go with epoxy, as long as you don't mind it NEVER coming off (or at least, having to destroy the hub and sand down whatever surface you stuck it to). If you don't want a bond strong enough to stick mountains together (they're totally held together with epoxy resin... honest...) then I'd find hubs with a built in cable, that way you can superglue / stickypad them, and also cable tie the cables down, providing the USB hubs with a little leash... The sticky pads for car numberplates can usually be levered off with a little force - and we all know what kids are like! Might be worth trying to find some extra strong ones if you go this route.
K.C.Leblanc Posted March 5, 2010 Posted March 5, 2010 How about something like this. Internal USB 2.0 4-Port Hub - USBNow.co.uk

I couldn't find anywhere that sold isopropyl alchohol when I looked a little while back, but fortunatly I discovered Brasso - that and Tesco baby wipes will clean just about anything off anything. -- David Hicks
ninjabeaver Posted March 5, 2010 Posted March 5, 2010 No More Nails. Or as the site maintenance staff have, and this is no joke ' Sticks Like SH!T'.
Andrew_C Posted March 5, 2010 Posted March 5, 2010 I couldn't find anywhere that sold isopropyl alchohol Science department? Meths will do, IMS better.
ricki Posted March 5, 2010 Posted March 5, 2010 Hi I am not a fan of super glue I found 2 students stuck together the other day because they brought some in from home and glued their hand together so were literally stuck on each other. Richard

You need to look for medical suppliers but be careful to find the right wipes as some are specificall non-alcohol. I've got some pads on my octoinkjet store if anyone wants any... As for glues... Trust me when I say that Superglue is a total waste of time... Plastics are notoriously difficult to glue to anything especially when the plastic concerned is poly propylene, although that's unlikely to be used in PC components. The other thing is that all you're encouraging the children to do is smash the thing off anyway... I'd go with security screws and bracket personally... 1
pete Posted March 5, 2010 Posted March 5, 2010 If you don't care about it ever being removable, try polystyrene cement (aka Airfix plastic aircraft glue). It'll melt the plastics together.
ljlbray Posted March 5, 2010 Posted March 5, 2010 don't you have anywhere you could attach a cable tie to?Like just cable tying all the wires at the back? We do this and it's only a problem if a keyboard breaks or a mouse goes..But a 0.05p cable tie is less expensive to replace than component...
