I thought i'd just send a few PSN messages to a few of my friends and couldn't sign into the playstation network. So i dig through the settings only to find that my PS3's clock is messed up and won't reset even when set manually.

 

After a quick search, i came across this: PlayStation Network down, so are lots of PS3s (update) -- Engadget :mad:

The scary stupid thing is they only need to test 5 dates to confirm the service will work for <24 years!

Thats when its silly, its not like its not simple for them to test.

You'd think the PS3 would store the date/time in a chip powered by a watch battery. Essentially how PCs work, but then they periodically check in with a Time Server.

One theory:

The going theory is that the PS3 is storing some form of date in GMT, then modifying that to get whatever you see in the on-screen clock. That modification process seems to be fine--the system can take 2/28/2010, 9PM GMT, add four hours, and get 3/1/2010, 1AM random time zone.

 

What's apparently effed, as speculation goes, is when the internal GMT-tracking rolls over to 3/1. It's either not rolling, or rolling to 2/29, at which point a system tries to add/subtract from 2/29, which it can't do because the front-end calendar doesn't have a 2/29/2010, and shit explodes. Seemed to happen around 4PM PDT, which I think is 12AM GMT, so.

 

And the PS3 launched in 2006; it's hit 4 2/28s so far. 2007 and 2009 were odd-numbered years; 2008 was an even, and a leap year. 2010 is the first even non-leap-year the system's been around for. If some sort of base-level math is choking on itself, it may have ruled out the odd 2007 and 2009 successfully, but is convinced the even 2010 is a leap year (this part I'm less sure of, but is why leap year could theoretically come into play at some point.)

Which implys that it does have an internal clock, thats the problem. If your ps3 was not on when the date rolled over the internal clock did it for you and that borked the system date.

Its a bit of a joke sony let this happen, they are getting so much more shody in recent years.

Interesting theory, I have an original PS3 and was watching a DVD on it last night from around 10pm til somewhere around the 1am spot, didn't notice any problems last night but I'll have a closer look when I get in, see if having it switched on at the rollover has let this problem slip me by...

I am pretty sure my one was on during the GMT changeover so I will check mine tonight too.

Turned my one on yesterday to watch Beerfest DVD, didn't notice anything wrong with the system, will have to check tonight I guess to make sure everything is ok I guess

After doing a bit more digging around it seems to be only the Phat PS3s that have the issue.

 

The Slim ones seem to be fine though

 

edit - even setting the time manually has no effect so i guess it's a firmware bug

Ive got a slim and played a quick game of burnout last night, noticed it wouldnt log into PSN but wasnt a big deal at the time as I was playing offline

 

Oh well, no MW2 for a few days then

As an owner of both consoles, I'm more than happy to pay for the service I get with Xbox Live and very disappointed with PSN despite the fact it's free. It's just a case of you get what you pay for I suppose...

I was signed into PSN last night, had a few games of Resistance 2 and worked ok

 

However PSN has been very flaky lately, signing me and out willy nilly.

I have an fat 80GB machine. I didn't use mine last night as i decided to watch some red dwarf instead.

 

I will check tonight to see if i can sign in. Might have a quick (4 hours usually) blast on Killzone 2

Apparently PS3 Dev units are stuck in an endless reboot, so it's not looking good for Sony at the moment!

Saw this problem this morning as I thought I'd clock up half an hour on Fallout before work. Noticed the clock straight away, had to manually set as it wouldn't update via the 'net. Tried to sign in and found this...

 

Sodding thing made me think my router was playing silly efforts.

 

Checking on the 'net found everyone has the same issue.

It's not an update - but one may well be required to fix this...

 

So far - only the 'fat' PS3s are suffering from this issue, so yes - if you have an older one it will be borked until sony sort it.

only if you have a fat PS3 that isn't one of the 160GB ones (apparently they don't have the problem).

atleast mico$oft have acknowledged the red ring of infinate ever increasing rage issue, and will replace the console. when a PS3 turns on its "im broken" light you have to buy a new one

After about 2 years.... my friend went through 5. £££

 

No you dont need to but a new one. It can be fix out of warrenty.

 

Sony have acknowledged the problem. See statements.

 

 

 

 

One day of network downtime vs £30 a year... I'll keep the free thanks.
