KEYBOARD SHORTCUTS:

NOTE: On multiple monitors, continually pressing a keyboard shortcut combination below will cause the window to snap to the side and scroll in that direction through the multiple monitor screens.

Windows Key + Left Arrow Key = This will snap the current active window to the left side of the screen, or unsnap a window that is snapped to the right side of the screen.

Windows Key + Right Arrow Key = This will snap the current active window to the right side of the screen, or unsnap a window that is snapped to the left side of the screen.

Windows Key + Up Arrow Key = Maximize the current active window to full screen.

Windows Key + Down Arrow Key = Minimize the current active window to the taskbar.

Thanks, I'd forgotten this one, but it is dragging the window to one side until your cursor reaches the edge of the screen.

True, but it does take both hands to press 4 keys, rather than one hand to press 2. Also, some people think Ctrl+Alt+Del is only used in bad situations, so wouldn't do it just to lock the PC.

I prefer the 2 finger - 1 thumb salute:

Right Ctrl + Right Alt + Del = 1 handed satisfaction (LOL )

followed by a fist on the keyboard over Enter is very satisfying. :D

I know it's sad, but i'm waiting for a dodgy VM to boot, so check the pics, they make a v.good flick book. :)

incidentally, how do your users change password? Or do you force them to do it?

double click on every object just to see what it does

yeah like double clicking the title bar of any app / window normally maximizes / reduces the window size ( just like the double square button normally located between the minimize and close button at the top right )

Thanks for the pictures - a wonderful example of wasting time at work!! :-)

As for the password changes, we force a change at logon about a week into each term. Also, there's a little link by the logoff button which allows them to do it if they wish at another time.

Win+M minimises too. Why so many different ways to do the same thing?

Win+L locks the computer - I use that one whenever I walk away from my PC, and encourage those staff with longer time-outs on their screensavers to do likewise.

Win + Shift + M ??

Do UK IBM keyboards have New Line on the return key?

As for all the letters in other languages on the keys, if I wasn't a touch typist my eyes would murder me with all of those sooo confusing!

Arabic Lenovo ones do!

You should try using a MacBookPro, it's like a flippin' xmas tree when it gets to dusk and those keys light up! :p

Another reason not to own a Macbook Pro then ;)

I force password changes in the second week of every term from AD

i was thinking more of Enjay's users without using ctrl+alt+delete. every term? that's loads, i don't think we bother here.

once you pop, you can't stop. you gotta try it johnny boy, it's even got a 3 finger salute of it's own if you miss windows that much, but stuff rarely goes wrong! :p :p

did anyone notice the strategically placed piece of SODIMM and a DLP chip from Texas Instruments (you gotta love BETT for useless stuff!)? It makes me feel like i'm still an IT technician :nerd:

They can use Ctrl+Alt+Del if they want, it isn't disabled, but generally they just wait for the forced change, or use a different link on their Start Menu to change passwords.

Is termly all that often for password changes? I've worked in businesses which forced monthly changes, so termly doesn't seem so bad, it is only 3 passwords a year (plus, many of them probably just have incrementing numbers at the end!).

I would have thought so. :thumb:

Anyone know how to create a wiki on here then?! I don't mind doing it, I just don't know how...

I've got a Macbook :p its a great paper weight. Its currently acting as a bridge over my waste bin in my room so I can put my cup of tea and nibbles somewhere not on my desk :p

It has Snow Leopard on it and yes it works and is fine, but I just don't see any benifit of it over Windows or Microsoft stuff I'm afraid, infact its got more Microsoft software and tools on it than Apple!

Anyway were moving to the ever common Apple VS Microsoft lol

My users are forced to change passwords monthly by GPO.

In Win7, if you middle-click on icons which are pinned to the taskbar, you get a second instance of that application. Only found that recently, and really like it.

Also, if you have Word or similar pinned there, you can right-click the icon to get a list of recently-opened files.

Oddly, you only seem able to pin applications to the taskbar if they are installed locally though, not on the network - anyone know a way around that?

That's going to be a really useful tip to know, thanks :)

Our lot would never change their passwords unless forced. They objected to being forced after so many days because the password change would invariably happen at the most inconvenient time for them.

The head wanted passwords changed more frequently, so the termly force by me was a compromise. The date is set in the staff calendar as Tuesday in the second week of every term = Staff Password Changes.

Termly is a bit loose by most business standards; monthly being the norm. While we have a 3 term year, many schools operate a 6 term year and would, therefore, be changing passwords every 6 weeks; which is pretty good.

I tell people a few days before they are forced to change (messages at logon, plus notices in the registers) so that people aren't surprised when it happens. Hopefully, this means the passwords are a bit better than enjay123, since people have had a chance to think about them first...

Also, for right click you'll see the name of the app appear in this list. Right click that and you get a couple more options including "run as admin" - handy for when you want to open a command prompt or whatever as admin.
