Anyway I'm wanting to use it to filter obscene emails too but really don't want to spend all my life typing a list of banned words. Does anyone know where I can find one on the internet? The AUP is very general about not abusing the facilities or using inappropriate language. That they are expected to adhere to standard school policies of not swearing/bullying/racism etc while using the school network and email facilities.

Combine and edit them as required. http://www.google.co.uk/search?&q=Swear+words+list+filter Bullying/racism is a lot harder to automagically detect. It's very dependant on context and meaning. Something impossible for a computer to understand. You're better off using a mark one eyeball.

john Posted October 31, 2006 Posted October 31, 2006 You do know that Sohos gives you a list of about 200 words for the filter don't ya? Its a text file called Offensivewords or offensive, and its normally in the folder that puremessage unzipped into, just in there open it up and copy and paste.

I had one of my most enjoyable lunch times with the staff all trying to think up the most offensive words they could. We got a pretty good list out of it (and I think we all learnt a new word to boot!)

srochford Posted April 10, 2007 Posted April 10, 2007 Surely the big problem with any of this is that pupils are far more inventive than we are. Someone mentioned about the possible spellings of "Viagra" which weren't included in a list eg V1agra, V!agra etc. For any "bad" word you can come up with, the average pupil will come up with an awful lot of alternative spellings - either because they can't spell or they're trying to get round the filter. How much effort are you going to put into finding (eg) "v 1 a g r a" etc?

I was, and still am, slightly disturbed by the number of times the word "boneless" was typed in a day. I shall have to investigate when the holidays are over.
