cookie_monster Posted February 9, 2010 Posted February 9, 2010 Who uses EMBC mail via OWA or Outlook exchange connector? Each user gets 50Mb of storage which is pitiful at best we have a new member of admin staff who has only been here for a couple of months and they've already filled that. Their predecessor also filled their mail box and we had to move them onto POP3 so mail was stored locally in the end, the problem with this is that they then can't see this mail when working from home. How do others cope with this issue do you just host your own mail servers? Cheers.

korifugi Posted February 9, 2010 Posted February 9, 2010 I refuse to use it as my main site has it's own in-house exchange server. - I have set rules up so when they decide to send anything through to it I get a copy but I've only had three emails to it in the last god knows how many years...

sparkeh Posted February 9, 2010 Posted February 9, 2010 Our mailboxes are 200Mb but still not enough for the office staff. I have raised the prospect of exchange a few times but nothing has happened yet.

cookie_monster Posted February 9, 2010 Author Posted February 9, 2010 Do you have a schools agreement? We do have schools agreement but we would only want enought licences for admin and maybe teaching staff the students can stay on EMBC. Does SA mean you have to licence every desktop?

I was under the impression that if you added something to SA then you had to buy it for all of the machines. We have 500 desktops but I can't just licence Office for 300 of them, so with Exchange we can't just but 50 CALs we would have to get 500. Right?
bigjb Posted February 9, 2010 Posted February 9, 2010 We have our own on-site mail server. We use Mdaemon from AltN. The limits set are in relation to the size of storage you have onsite.

I know that Office and Windows licences are seperate as are CALs you can have SA with just the OS and CAL's if you run Open Office. I don't know about exchange but SQL cals aren't included we had to add them on for SIMS.

I have raised the prospect of exchange a few times but nothing has happened yet. I use Google Apps Email as a client for my EMBC email account. 7Gb of storage, I can access it on the road and a much better interface. You could use a solution that or encourage staff to store email locally rather than on the server. (Although I don't have much more than 200Mb of work mail at the moment - I'm guessing that people who have that much must receive a lot of attachments).

This person hasn't been here 3 months yet and they're at their limit (i've a feeling their predecessor just forwarded their entire mailbox). I'll have to look into Outlook again for them but like I say it's a pain if they're working from home and need to look back. Thanks.
Edu-IT Posted February 9, 2010 Posted February 9, 2010 We have Windows, Office and the CALs. Okay, Exchange Server STD CALs are included in the core CALs that come with a schools agreement it seems. So you'd just need a server to run Exchange, Windows Server licence, Exchange STD and that's it.

Mail sent to us hits our Exchange box and that's it? Where does the rule come in? If they send it to a wrong email address then Exchange tells them so.

I think we're misunderstanding each other here - I don't use my EMBC email account for anything whatsoever, but there is always the danger that something important may get sent to it which I'll miss as I never check it. I have an autoforward rule set up on my EMBC account that means anything coming into the inbox automatically gets forwarded to my email account at my main site, (which also has OWA set up - this doesn't affect the above but means I can pick up mail when I'm not there) so if anything come through I'll just pick it up from there.

How do your MX records work? Do you have a different domain name for your Exchange setup and your *.sch.uk address still pointing to EMBC?
