computers to IT staff ratio

Hi,

 

There was a document on the becta site about the Ratio of technicial staff to computers. I think it was about 1 staff member to 150 computers.

 

If anyone knows where it is let me know.

Its not how many staff you have it's their computer literacy you need to benchmark.

From that you can then define how many IT staff you will need to augment the system.

 

Say your benchmark for your staff was from low to medium literacy then you would have to support them more so for every 50 computers within the school you would need 1 IT staff member.

 

If on the other hand your staff were in the benchmark of medium to high level then the computer to technician ratio would change to 1 tech per 100 computers through out the school.

You can have 3 awesome IT Techs and a degraded network, you just can't fix everything at once...

 

The value is just abritrarily chosen, I can't see that any hard statistics based on the average technicians skillset or average computer network spec! Does it account for speciality software, other OS's than the assumed norm... etc

^ Yep, and what about budget? Im more than capible of running 350 PCs on my own, did it for a few years, but now everything is on its asse as we have no money to replace the 8year+ old kit.

Yes, I totally neglected budget...

 

We have 2 technicians (very, very, very capable techs) and myself, we support around 680 machines in total inc Servers & Macs. We have a pretty much upgraded all areas for computers/laptops - our life is relatively easy but very busy because of the volume of issues that get raised... give it 5 years we're going to be up the paddle if degradation is bad and we have no budget to upgrade (based on the old hardware we ripped out for degradation & financial situation and cutbacks).

 

I neglected to mention expectations of ICT support, we do not solely fix computers, setup rooms & keep the network running... we have other jobs that fall under our area

That is district wide which is 12 schools and 2 admin buildings.

I have since moved on. The district that I used to work for was consolidated with the ISD in the county. I now work for them, and we have a larger but still kinda small team. Over the county we now have 8000 workstations, various phone systems, and other devices, different networks and different services. There is a total of 6 techs, 2 engineers, and 4 data people that take care of this giant. And yes I do actually have personal time and get sleep every night My typical work week during non rush time is 40-45 hours as I refuse to live at work. At the previous job I worked about the same and things ran pretty good for the most part.

All that and more. We do pretty much anything and everything that has to do with technology, and making it work from start to finish

1 tech per 150 pcs on reliable and 1 per 50 on non reliable is mental.

 

Here we have 3 vs 800+ reliable and in fact getting rid of our NVQ techs actually helped things because they got fixed by qualified staff and not some little student who wants to play cannon fodder

Im here all by myself, i do have a support company i can turn to if needed, i dont for the most part any more, ive got the system working mostly as i want it.

 

500+ machines (PC's and Laptops)

about 52 projectors and the same of IWB's

31 networked printers plus a few stand alone

850 students

about 70 staff i think, not sure on that, AD has more than we have due to old ones not beeing taken off (befor i started)

 

Also got the sims bit to look after, though i dont have access to the server there without a member of the support company beeing there

Ive got everything ready for IP phones whenever they want, with a few ajustments needed

The visualisers still need to be counted...not to mention it's a school so theres SIMS and roughly 1250-1300 users to add to that equation

This is now 120 laptops and near 400 computers and 6 servers couple of NAS and slowly decreasing number of printers out with the old in with fewer new, Oh and half a dozen IPads. I'm more experienced now but January last year this was my first job out of uni BSc Computer Science which realy isn't about tech support and not a single module or mention of networking or server managment so learning on the job
