Power Settings on Logon Screen

Hi,

 

I've just been setting up a Network with Windows XP SP2 Clients and Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition Network OS.

 

The thing that is really bugging me and everyone else is that when the clients are left on the logon screen, after "X" amount of minutes the screensaver kicks in, then after a further "X" amount of minutes the screen goes off.

 

Does anybody know of a way that I can disable these power settings for the logon screen, ideally by running something from a Group Policy, so that they just stay on the screen that says Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to start.

 

Kids and Staff keep thinking that the machines are off, and press the power button whcih just shuts them right down! Which is becoming a right pain!!!!!

PS Anyone know if you can "lock" the "Logon to" dropdown menu so that it can only be set to the Domain name and not changed to the local computer??

I was thinking about this only last week. It does seem odd - I'm sure there must be a way to configure it.

 

I shall *try* ad investigate - tho I'm sure some smart ass will beat me to it...

Its technically for GP to apply this at the end of a RIP install but it might cause it to default everytime to domain - even if you log on as local machine user and logg off. I'm not sure - havent tested it myself yet but comments are welcome.

It doesnt really do much - as far as i can see.

 

I'm not sure whether it even effects the "at logon" (before you logon) power profile.

 

I've added something to the logon script - import a reg tweak that sets the power profile to "always on" mode - by default its turning monitor off only after 20 mins.

 

You could always set the power button to do nothing when its pressed - but then there is the 4 sec delay thing tho

 

Thus another reason why not accessible pc's are the way to go.

 

Keep it secret, keep it safe (to sorta quote LOTR lol)

configuring it is the fun bit - i havent really understood it properly myself.

 

I've just got the msi installer deployed and the adm added to the GP templates and "sort of" configured.

 

Best way is to try it yourself gecko and see how you get on.

 

Its very low on my list of things to do when i return to work so cant help u really on it.

@gecko: If you don't have a test system at work, do *NOT* try to play with things that could make major changes to your AD / GPOs. I am sure kingswood would be very understanding if things got broken .. but the teachers/student/Head won't.

 

Get hold of a trial of Virtual PC and use that ... you can still see how happy it will/won't be.

Cant anyway cos cse are doing it and I have a test system at home and like I said before I will have a go on that when I am at home as per my previous comment "oopppss Will have to try it on the server at home I have."

One thing , where do you get virtual pc from ?

 

I know about vmware I believe it is but not sure about virtual pc ??

Just had a thought that perhaps if u create a default user [domain - in the netlogon share] - when making the profile, you could set the Always On choice accordingly and then all machines would have that in them (maybe) and you could make it so all machines choose Always On during logon - reg tweak for that

 

Or something like that

Hows that central profile going - ppl have said on here that a mandatory profile doesn't work well with WinXP and Win2000 - I presume you have both clients.

I never have any power problems with using the default user profile.
