enjay Posted January 14, 2010 Posted January 14, 2010 We have a WiFi hotspot in the Sixth Form, where students can connect personal laptops and gain Internet access. A number of them have asked me if they can connect using their iPhones, which is fine in itself, although they will need to specify proxy settings before they can get anywhere. Not being an iPerson myself, I can't easily put some instructions together myself - does anyone have/know of some simple "how to" notes for doing this? Also, with the PCs, I recommend some proxy switching software to enable easy use both at home and school - does anything similar exist for the iPhone?
localzuk Posted January 14, 2010 Posted January 14, 2010 Its pretty easy. You have to connect to the wireless, then go back to the wireless configuration screen, and choose the wireless connection you are connected to, then you can enter the proxy settings (only manual proxy settings IIRC). I've done this with my boss' phone here and it works fine.
Optics Posted January 14, 2010 Posted January 14, 2010 Settings > Wifi > Tap your Wifi Connection > Scroll down > Select Manual and Enter Proxy Settings Proxy is done on a per connection setting, so wont need to be removed for their existing home settings. 1
localzuk Posted January 14, 2010 Posted January 14, 2010 http://mams.rmit.edu.au/y83kujcsmg9y.pdf has details on it how to do it. 1
DMcCoy Posted January 14, 2010 Posted January 14, 2010 Surely "there's an app for that"? Actually no apps apart from safari even use the proxy settings
Edu-IT Posted January 14, 2010 Posted January 14, 2010 I posted a reply to this on the RM forums for you. 1
sparkeh Posted January 14, 2010 Posted January 14, 2010 On my ipod touch I can't set proxy exceptions. Is this the same for iPhone? A real PITA.
HodgeHi Posted January 14, 2010 Posted January 14, 2010 You can choose to set your http proxy to either manual or automatic on an iPhone that is.
enjay Posted January 15, 2010 Author Posted January 15, 2010 Thanks folks. I've updated our documentation, and will ask the students to test it out for me.
