Migrating from ISP POP/Webmail to Exchange

Now that Ive got Exchange 2010 up and running pretty much, Im thinking of migrating all my email accounts from my ISP hosted POP/Webmail to the Exchange server.

 

Is there a way to download all the messages from the pop accounts, and import them into Exchange?

 

I was thinking I could use outlook to download all the messages, and then export it as a PST, but is there any way to import a pst into the Exchange Server, rather than just into a users Outlook client?

You can use exmerge to pull them back into the new exchange server - just use the second part of a 2 stage process.

yes you can import a pst into an exchange account. Its the way I have done it a few times.

Exmerge does not work with Exchange 2007 and I doubt that's changed for Exchange 2010. Don't know about 2010, but on 2007 you can either:

 

a) Import PSTs to mailboxes via some not-too-hard powershell commands. Sadly you can only do this from a second 32 bit machine with the 32 bit version of the Exchange Management tools installed, not on the 64bit Exchange server itself.

 

b) Use Outlook - it can still open PSTs when connected to an Exchange mailbox and you can move folders and items from one to the other.

It was pretty trivial actually. I just added the pop account into Outlook, let it download the entire inbox, and then just dragged the messages into a subfolder of the main Inbox.

 

Not sure how I would do it if I was wanting to migrate an entire userbase of accounts, but for just a handful of accounts it was fine.

I am just working this same thing out and that is what it is going to have to be done for us, setup outlook, download, drag across etc. Very messy and slow for many accounts!

We use Outlook Live (which is based on 2010) and in the exchange web control panel (i.e. https://your_server/ecp) there is an email migration tab that can do all this.

I haven't seen that on my Exchange 2010 box, so can I just put in POP3 details and let it download them straight into Exchange with that and if so did you use it at all?

Seems my ISP must have been doing some pretty decent spam filtering.. Im being bombarded since Ive brought it in-house.

 

Can anyone recommend a free spam filter for Exchange?

Yes its the free hosted service as part of Live@Edu that runs ex2010.
