Popular Post Dos_Box Posted December 11, 2009 Popular Post Posted December 11, 2009 Shaun and I have been monitoring the donations thread and have decided that the best way to go ahead with this is to look at giving any donations you want to make to UK educational charities. Primarily because EduGeek makes more than enough to sustain itself now (which is why the donate button 'vanished') and we no longer felt it necessary to take money from you for no reason! So what we have thought we can do is to choose a different UK charity in the education sector (preferably IT focussed) each month to give any donations to, in return for an 'edusupporter' type of tag which we've yet to decide on. The only thing we need from you (apart from donations!) is a list a charities we can donate to, so if you know of nay please list them here so we can have a good look at them. Chris. 22
teejay Posted December 11, 2009 Posted December 11, 2009 Fantastic idea! Personally I prefer giving to small, usually local charities rather than the big boys as I feel they make a bigger impact.
alan-d Posted December 11, 2009 Posted December 11, 2009 I'd like to see the Special Needs schools benefit. They don't use a lot of IT kit as we know it but have some really expensive special kit. 4
vikpaw Posted December 12, 2009 Posted December 12, 2009 I vote for helping out underfunded primary schools. Is there an organisation that helps them or can help identify them. possible those in rural locations that don't have support from secondary schools. Also, it's not a charity but what about helping the project that Kmount was working on, or does it HAVE to be UK based?
elsiegee40 Posted December 12, 2009 Posted December 12, 2009 While not specifically IT based, the work of this special school is amazing and I'm sure they would put the funds to good use: Broomhill Bank School :: Preparation for Life :: Tunbridge Wells :: Kent
steveg Posted December 14, 2009 Posted December 14, 2009 Why not collect the money in a sort of edugeek charity fund, that can then be used to fund small scale IT type projects directly. For example a touch screen for a SEN pupil etc. Would mean you have more control over where the money goes, and would be good publicity for edugeek as well? Guess it might end up being more hassle than its worth, but just an idea! Steve 1

Or what about expensive equipment that individual schools can't afford or justify for the infrequency of use, fluke or something along those lines?
Chunky Posted December 14, 2009 Posted December 14, 2009 I'd like to suggest Chunky's Aid for Support and Help. Please make all cheques payable to C.A.S.H. and stick 'em in the post to me, where I'll process them appropriately. Chunks 3

Please make all cheques payable to C.A.S.H. and stick 'em in the post to me, where I'll process them appropriately. How does that contribute to the discussion? Personally, I'd sooner see a nominated list of charities or organisations, with admin approval, which can be selected by the donator at the time. Then we have the good bits of both ways: we (collectively) can vote for who goes on the list, but the donator has some amount of opinion on where it ends up in the end.
ZeroHour Posted December 14, 2009 Posted December 14, 2009 I am wondering if we did a vote for a charity every 1/2/3 months or so (we would transfer the funds to them after) and then you all could vote for the one that gets the donations?
witch Posted December 14, 2009 Posted December 14, 2009 Seems a bit unwieldy to me, although a lovely idea...Sounds like a lot of work for someone. We are, after all, spread out over a vast area. I for one would like to see purely IT related charities - preferably educational 1
alan-d Posted December 14, 2009 Posted December 14, 2009 I for one would like to see purely IT related charities - preferably educational Agreed - otherwise the list could be endless.

If the vote/transfer was done every 3 months it would be relatively straight forward just as a paypal etc transfer.
alan-d Posted December 14, 2009 Posted December 14, 2009 Just one point. We would have to ensure that they are registered charities. A lot of schools don't do this. I'm not sure what the legalities are donating to an organisation which is not registered as a charity.
Chunky Posted December 14, 2009 Posted December 14, 2009 How does that contribute to the discussion? Sincerest apologies - it was written in the name of comedy. (which can sometimes be wasted, apparently) Please feel free to close your eyes and not read anything I post in the future. :) Chunks
teejay Posted December 14, 2009 Posted December 14, 2009 The only issue is that if you give to charities directly, then they can claim Gift Aid on the donation which is a rebate of the tax you have paid on the money you have donated. If it goes through Edugeek first, then they will lose the Gift Aid. I think the best thing to do would be to have a 'Edugeek Supported Charities' page, so people can donate directly. I'm sure a way could be worked out with the charity of knowing who has donated so that they can have their EduSupprter button.

It wasn't wasted, and have no intention of ignoring you, but just lately there's been so much thread derailing it's getting silly. Since this is a discussion that affects the whole community, I think it's only fair to try and keep in on topic. (Dos_Box should probably take some legal advice on this.)
elsiegee40 Posted December 14, 2009 Posted December 14, 2009 If we are looking for specific IT type charities, how about: AbilityNet - Adapting Technology Changing Lives AbilityNet is a national charity helping disabled adults and children use computers and the internet by adapting and adjusting their technology. Our special expertise is ensuring that whatever your age, health condition, disability or situation you find exactly the right way to adapt or adjust your ICT to make it easier to use. Kidsafe UK - Helping Children To Protect Themselves which does work with internet safety Computers for the DisabledComputers for the Disabled is a charity which supplies PCs to disabled people, disabled homes, centres, housebound and the elderly that makes no profit out of any PC supplied. 3
FN-GM Posted December 14, 2009 Posted December 14, 2009 Would it not be easier to return the money back to the users then let them decide?

russdev Posted December 15, 2009 Posted December 15, 2009 Would it not be easier to return the money back to the users then let them decide? We are talking about the future donations when made have been used etc. This is about the fact people wanted to donate and become edusupporters but we had removed the donation link. Russ
enjay Posted December 15, 2009 Posted December 15, 2009 A quick Google doesn't seem to turn up many edu IT charities; possibly too specific an area? There are various computers to Africa charities (these would need to be looked at carefully, to make sure we support an organisation which can actually use the equipment) or charities providing specialist IT equipment for disabled people - what do people think to those?

I am visiting a UK based charity tomorrow I.T. Schools Africa As I am going to Africa the 29th December in the hope to reach some under privilaged schools and provide some resources etc. One of my school customers in Birmingham put me in touch with the IT Schools Africa charity so far so good
