Proxy sites

We have problems with proxy sites and students accessing Bebo etc, would anyone be interested in sharing known proxies?

Just ask google. The following query should pull up every PHPProxy and CGI:Proxy it's indexed.

As you can see, Google has 33k or so indexed. You might find keyword and content filtering more effective.

The most common one that kids have been using here lately is https://pipeproxy.com , that one seems to often get through stuff, at least until we added the exact url on our ISA server

Like Geoff said content filtering is the best option. Just adding proxy, proxie, pr0xy and pr0xie stops them searching in google and such for them and specific ones usually have the word on their home page somewhere so it gets them as well.

Other than that its subscribing to some kind of blacklist which is never going to be upto the minute.

I was trying to do the exact opposite today incidently. There was a file I needed to download and the site was blocked because of "phishing", apparently.

 

I tried just about every proxy I learnt of during my college days, but our LEA is on the ball and every single one of them is blocked.

 

I even tried one that Geoff set up a while ago, but I think he has taken it down .

BTW if your filtering is like our - just blacklists, no content you may find that adding "./" to the end of a URL lets it through ie http://www.google.com./

It can't be porn? check it out: Nattisays.com is about webdesign with a mission to improve online experience...With a webcam, a weblog and other things..But no porn...DUH!

@Natti - a lot of unscrupulous web filter folk (Tom coughs and polishes his halo) build blocklists by google search, so your webcam might have come up in their search, and the automated agent basically goes "oh noes, webcam!" and bosh, you're a porn site. Merry christmas.

 

I actually personally vetted our proxies URL list (all 20-odd k of them) the other day when something daft accidentally crept in!

Natti - iirc (& im not 100% sure) there is a page within your site with inapropriate material on it. I remember going back to the root of your site and thinking how weir that the main site looks fine.

 

Maybe your host got hacked and you didnt realise it, then your host corrected the problem. Maybe you were just in a provocative pose, like i say i cant realy remember.

Thanks for the explanation. I can't remember ever having had inapropriate material on it. Got three kids @ home who would look very surprised finding me in such a pose..

I have over 7000 Proxy sites, tend to block by IP address and url eg

 

*.ctunnel.com & 208.53.131.176

 

because its free to change the url name in a free DNS but it costs money (usually) to get a new IP address. If you just block by url it could change its name to *.ctunnel1.com or *.ctunnel2.com etc. but it still has the same IP.

A very clever Student and myself have developed other filtering methods to block access, searches and downloads using ISA 2004. No where near fool(teacher)proof but it slows them down.

I can add other filtering tips if requested and am willing to help other schools with filtering/blocking tips. *TIP* Proxy sites are a good source for VERY NASTY Spyware. In IE Security Disable unsigned ActiveX Downloads.

For web proxies, using lists is counter productive - use regexes to detect http proxies and ufdbguard to detect and block ssl ones.

Surely it wouldnt be hard to write a script which would pull the html code of a proxy list and then remove everything except the links and add them to your internet filter and the script would run everyday.
