I think 'rip-off Britain' does really apply to web hosting. There's no way you could get a hosting solution at that price here. 49 euros = 44 pounds per month. You get what you pay for really, buy cheap - buy twice Hosting should be located as close to website visitors as possible for various reasons such as speed / latency, SEO and data protection. Power in the UK is also much more expensive than elsewhere, you will find most cheap providers are using desktop components rather than high quality server grade components in servers.

Gotta love those efficient germans! Sometime back in the early to mid-90's when I was using Claranet as my ISP and Usenet as my source of information, one of the Claranet techies in one of the newsgroups mentioned that servers based in Germany would be quick for the UK because of the way the Germans are peered with the UK. Whoosh straight over my head, but for some reason, that little bit of info has stuck with me for the best part of 15 years! Anyone care to explain? 15 years on, I might actually understand the explanation!

Correct me if I am wrong but Edugeek used to be hosted in the UK, but now it's gone abroad to Germany despite the majority of Edugeek's users are probably from the UK. To be honest I did a similar thing with my websites too and have no regrets. As for using desktop components in a server, I suppose it depends what you're referring to. I'd personally always look to use a server motherboard over a desktop motherboard, but a lot of high end desktop hardware is perfectly sufficient for servers. A good example is the Core 2 Duo and there are lots of hosts utilising this processor.

To be very honest our membership is very wide and to be honest we no longer look at core audience being in the UK as spread is wide. Members posting is a different matter but members visiting spread is very wide. Russ
