farquea Posted November 24, 2009 Posted November 24, 2009 We are planning to have a machine hooked up to a TV to display powerpoints. We want to be able to configure and update it remotely so RDP isnt going to work. Would anyone know a free piece of remote software like RealVNC etc. We would only need it on the 1 machine if that makes a difference? The only free thing i can think of is Logmein but with that being over the internet id rather not use it.

Does it support live TV? We've got a freeview connection into our current system, but that one looks nicer. Might be tempted to switch if it supports tv.

It doesnt (or didnt) but it does support embedding things like webpages, so if you can get your TV broadcast (maybe by VLC) then yes you will be able to show live TV. You can embed web news channels easy enough. The client is windows based anyway so you can do both... We use UltraVNC to remote in for anything that would be easier via windows; ie displaying a single video or powerpoint

Just so happens between home and work I've got pretty much everything I need. I know what I'm going to have a go at hacking together tomorrow.

How remotely do you want to access this computer? If you want to access the PC from another PC on your network then VNC (or, I should have thought, RDP) will be fine. You can also use VNC (or RDP) to control your display PC from an external PC Somwhere On The Internet, but you'll need to get your firewall to port-forward the appropriate network port to your display PC. -- David Hicks

We've been looking at investing in digital signage, but it's all so expensive... I wasn't aware of Xibo until yesterday... So I downloaded and installed it - what an awesome piece of kit! Needless to say we won't be paying thousands for a bought one! Thanks

link470 Posted November 25, 2009 Posted November 25, 2009 (edited) Believe it or not, I use Net Meeting [LOL]. The reason I chose Net Meeting is it's integration with our Active Directory accounts. So the person in the office who edits the PowerPoint simply logs into the remote computer hooked up to the TV's around the school from the server room with Net Meeting, and logs in using her existing network credentials which are passed via SSL thanks to Net Meeting supporting that. Yes, it can be a pain to set up since getting the machine to start up with desktop sharing support can be a lot of reboots and trial and error since the option is always grayed out until you do something magic [which even I totally forget what it was, a lot of tinkering back and forth], and the colour quality when you connect is like 16 bit or something terrible, but it works since all she needs to do is open PowerPoint, hit show presentation, and exit. She edits the PowerPoint document locally. Edited November 25, 2009 by link470
