wireless system tray icon

Is there a way to hide the wireless icon from system tray for restricted users?

We are quite new to wireless in our school and thought kids didn't have access to it. I was wrong.

I logged in as a restrcicted account and was able to disconnect the wifi connection.

 

When they do this the connection stays in a manual state. So next user cant login.

 

Must of cropped up before in schools.

Not sure hiding it wouldbe prevent students disableing the wireless has they could do eithier these two things

 

1- They can disable the wireless card with the wireless on/off switch if you have it on your laptops

 

1- They can disable the wireless card with the wireless Function key and the required F* Button to turn the wireless card off and on

 

*What ever the number on the F buttons to turn it off

 

 

So what ever the case, it something you got to get used to, you cant stop the problem, unless you dont have the swith or the f button.

We hide the system tray completely on our network, and also all the BIOS settings are setup to stop the wireless being turned off using the function keys. Works for us

What brand laptops you using out of intrest to do this, dont think I have ever seen this in a BIOS before

 

Dosent hiding the wireless cause you problems throught?

 

Sometime I have to disconnect it and connect it again, or it just gets dis connected by itself, so that would invole looking in an admin account to connect it again, that would just be a pain to have to logon into more account everytime to do that

You can hide the notification area completely so just the clock is displayed -

 

User Config > Admin Templates > Start Menu and Taskbar - Hide the notification area (Enabled)

Just noticed this post.

 

In answer to your question, we have Dell, Stone and Viglen laptops in this school. The Viglen ones don't have this feature, but the Dell and Stone ones do. This prevents the students disableing the wireless adapter using the key combination.

 

The only issue we get is ocassional drop offs from the wireless network that we can't fix without a re-boot (Normally you would be able to right hand click and select repair) We also had to put a shortcut to volume control on the desktop so the students could change the volume, as hiding the tray completely also hides the normal access to the volume controls.
