Haptic Posted November 9, 2009 Posted November 9, 2009 Hey guys Ok I wanna take the plunge and learn more about linux and was hoping you guys can advise me on which package to go for as there are quite a few, I've heard that Ubuntu is the one to go for so if you can guide me to the do's and dont's and also any help with dual boot as I'm running 7 and dont wanna loose or corrupt what I have , Mucho appreciato in advance:cool:
ranj Posted November 9, 2009 Posted November 9, 2009 I would advise Ubuntu as it is a good starter for someone new to Linux, Like you I have been trying to learn Linux (focussing on Ubuntu and OpenSuse) the more I use it the more I learn. Both are great platforms. I was spending a lot of time on these 2 OS's until Windows 7 came along which I love (well done Microsoft). I would recommend OpenSuse as well as that has by far the best software downloader tool (called yast) which makes installing applications very easy from its library of 1000s of apps. The new Ubuntu whilst I haven't installed it yet I have heard good things about it. 1

Dual boot is easy to setup [especially if you use WUBI (http://wubi-installer.org/)] I had a problem with a previous version of Ubuntu installed through WUBI. I decided to uninstall Ubuntu and all in left behind was the boot to Windows/Ubuntu option at startup [i think that this is not an issue as I will shortly be installing the new Ubuntu and will be using that boot option again. 1

box_l Posted November 9, 2009 Posted November 9, 2009 Radically Simple PCLinuxOS Is even easier that ubuntu I think, ati and nvidia drivers loaded by default. Flash, shockwave preinstalled, that sort of thing. Also I prefer KDE over GNOME any time. regards BoX 1

sparkeh Posted November 9, 2009 Posted November 9, 2009 I have tried loads of distros but still end up back at Ubuntu, its good for novices and experts alike. 9.10 is a great release as well. My only complaint is that full drive encryption is still not in the gui installer. 1

mjs_mjs Posted November 9, 2009 Posted November 9, 2009 i've always had issues moving full time to ubuntu as i'm a dual screen person, and none of my dual head graphics cards have worked. also if your just playing with it, save the hastle of dual booting and run it within sun virtual box. 1

Jaunty Jackalope is Ubuntu 9.04 Karmic Koala is Ubuntu 9.10 I'm looking forward to Ubuntu 10.4 (Leisuresuit Larry) To the OP, I recommend Linux Mint. It's Ubuntu but with a more familiar interface for Windows users. 1

If it doesn't google normaly has the answer or someone on a forum does. Or i work it out (which i did when installing Xibo on 9.10 in a sun virtualbox on my RM cc4 client and then sharing it accross the network for remote displays.)

sparkeh Posted November 10, 2009 Posted November 10, 2009 A note on wubi: Remember that this is not a 'proper' installation of Ubuntu, its essentially a disk image stored on the c: drive of your windows partition, you will take a performance hit so don't completely judge the Ubuntu experience on a wubi installation. There are other issues with these kind of disk images such as no hibernation and hard reboots are more likely to cause data corruption than a normal installation. If you like Ubuntu and want to move it to its own partition, you can take your wubi install and use LVMP to move it.
featured_spectre Posted November 10, 2009 Posted November 10, 2009 create a partition in your HDD, install ubuntu, then take your Win 7 disk and restore the Master Boot Record, that way if you decide you dont like ubuntu, the GRUB loader doesnt cock up your system! 1
