Oh how I would love to have a SSD but I like to run at least 500GB on my master because I like to install all my games on it. Everything else is on a slave or well slaves . Downloads documents music video everything. But I should enter also as I would like to give one a go and I can't afford one. But just as well. If i could...I might be one of those people who just buy a comp instead of building one. In my book that's not good at all. My computer is fast cause I'm broke lolz. So I milk it for all it's got.

It's one of the old work machines I robbed (err acquired) out of the skip, I chucked in more RAM, a Radeon 3650 AGP card and a bigger disk. It works fine, this is of course a "test rig" to make sure it will work on the worst machines we have at the school ...ahem.

 

It is an Athlon XP 1500 or possibly a 1700, 2gb RAM, blah...

 

I think it is running okay as a system, definitely usable, although with very few software installed and no active directory connected... no Aero

I run Ubuntu 8.10 on a similar machine (without the good graphics card) and this can handle more stuff open, (7 firefox windows, 8 open office documents, setiathome) without any slowdown. But it just ain't as pretty.

This thread seems to be more about the performance of peoples own rigs, so I might be posting in the wrong place I thought it could be useful to create a list of generic machines that are being used in schools and how well they run Windows 7. This may be impossible due to the amount of hardware out there but since I'm testing it on our own hardware anyway it's not a problem to share what I find.

 

(All drivers installed by Win7 unless otherwise stated)

Hmm. I seem to be well off the "pace" of that with my home machine:

 

- CPU: dual 3.2Ghz 2Mb L3 Xeons

- RAM: 3Gb PC3200

- Graphics: ATi Radeon HD 4650 (with Asus beta drivers for now)

- HDD: 250Gb SATA Hitachi Deskstar

- Windows 7 Professional 32bit, clean install but now three months old.

 

It records an overall score of 5.0 - which isn't all bad for an old warhorse that's coming up to five years old and kept alive with bits off eBay. Considering how little it's cost me to build, you could even say I'm quite pleased with it.

Nice Setup! Quick question about the 5800 series if you dont mind as tempted by a 5850. In terms of triple monitor out does it work spanning the desktop across 3 displays of different sizes? I've currently got 2 x 20" widescreen monitors (1680x1050) and plan on buying a new 24" monitor (1920x1200) to use as the main centre desktop with one of my exisitng monitors at either side.

 

I'm not too interested in playing games using eyefinity but primarily wanted to use it as a triple monitor out for productivity. The main thing I want to make sure of is that I can use the 24" monitor as the centre monitor (with the start menu/task bar on it)? All of the demo's I've seen of triple-out are for eyefinity and have the start menu on the left most screen which I definitely dont want. Can you move the 'primary monitor' to the middle screen and 'position' the other monitors at each side?

 

Will the above setup work OK and/or are there any other 'gotchas' I need to be aware of?

[i realise I need to make sure the new monitor has a display port input]

 

Any tips would be appeciated

You currently have to have all monitors in the same res for eyefinity.

 

You can however set any screen you want primary and just extend teh desktop to the others for work.

 

You can have your toolbar on the middle monitor.

 

If you set your monitors as a group they can be in many configurations for work or play check out eyefinity configurations in google search.

 

Also check out Ultra monitor. With it I have a single desktop and my toolbar on each window with the programs for each window on it's own toolbar.

 

In my screen shot the toolbar you see is the middle monitor.

 

The left monitor is not taking shots with my screen shot software but it is also on an an 8800GTX and has it's own set of drivers so not surprised that there is an issue.

 

I am gaming now in triple screen with SoftTH if you want to give that a go it supports custom resolutions and you just need another video card for the 3rd video output.

 

Monitor 3 can come from any card...your primary card renders the resolution.

 

Look at my profile picks for a better look at what I am doing with a 4870 till my 5870 gets here.

 

Back on topic I wonder how much of a gain I will see in my windows score with the 5870 over my 4870 ?

What would be quite interesting is if people also posted their disk sub-scores (especially if you have an SSD or SAS disk). My SSD gets an overall disk score of 7.7 with the following sub-scores...
