Hi Kim,

 

Might be worth you also downloading the Logistix Update Packs and sticking them on the DVD when you go. Maybe you should ask Michael first, but I doubt there would be a problem.

 

A DVD full open free or open source education software would be a good idea as well.

Yep, bounced some of this by Michael already he's a top bloke and I'd wholeheartedly recommend his services if they were applicable to your needs!

 

A DVD full of software is a definite good idea, there's a wealth of potential out there and I've picked up the names of software on here that I'd never even thought of.

 

Power of a good community? :)

Have you made a similar request on SchoolForge-UK or via OpenSourceSchools? I am sure they will suggest a variety of software to take too.

Set up a Charity Giving - Donate to Charity | Give to Charity Online UK or similar site as id love to make a donation and im sure others would as well to support "Other" costs as well as info/advice/hardware etc thats alreadyt been given.

Hi everyone,

 

Just a quick thanks to cooper for his drivers CD, lots of fun stuff on there to be getting on with.

 

Awaiting the confirmation on flight booking but looks like around the 4th/5th Dec time.

 

Have started the fun injections :( .... pin cushion.

i was thinking you could ask any sponsors / companies on EG for help, but that's a bit cheeky, better wait until they offer. [cheers CPL so far ;) ]

 

just an idea, but i saw a new guy on here from DELL who said he could do anything to help, it might be worth asking for some of their DELL diagnostics CDs, they are really useful and have lots of tools on them.

 

I wangled a few in my last job, and they have tools that will let you alter the mobo ID, set asset tag etc, which you might want to do if they all come from different sources. There are also some good diagnostic tools in case something goes wrong with the kit in transit, plus you can give them to the newly trained 'fishermen' you're developing.

 

If you can ask the donors the service tags, you could download all you need from the Dell site, or ask for the driver CDs which they normally charge for, but might, for such a special cause and some PR, donate....

 

Ditto, any contacts from RM, could be useful.

 

Also, i know some tools work off floppy (memtestx86), so worth packing a USB floppy and some blank disks.

 

If you don't have much in the way of spare parts / peripherals might be worth trying to get some donations to be sent over. You've probably thought of it already, i'm just thinking you don't want to get there and find a hdd is knackered which reduces the no. of machines by 1! :(

 

Anyway, good work. Stay in touch if you can [anyone donating a Sat Phone?]

Morning Vik,

 

Pleasure as always to hear from you fella.

 

I'm planning on taking a few copies of the UBCD, Memtest86, etc and also some CDs/DVDs with stuff like Openoffice, etc for anyone local businesses or so that may be interested.

 

I'm in the throws now of preparing the first server build this end to go into the container this week to travel over so it's there when I get there. (can't take too much on the plane!)

You know what you really need is a serverroom-in-a-box , how cool would it be if not only were we demonstrating it at BETT, but we could say, it's in use right now in Africa as party of a charitable initiative by the relevant sponsors/contributors....

The schools aren't likely to have an internet connection so we're putting in a 'high' spec desktop PC to handle the 'server' function itself with hopefully a donated 250GB USB HDD kindly offered earlier in this thread.

 

It's 2003 R2 AD etc with redirected desktops, startmenus, shared docs etc and it has an internal mail server, moodle, etc etc so in effect a 'local' platform model so if the moodle grows they can share resources (courses) in the local area or we can offer 'update' CDs which local people can import or if all goes well and I'm back over there again we'll have patch cycles anyway!

 

Of course a big concern for all and sundry will be the whatif factor, what if something breaks, what if this happens etc, the idea being I will train interested people on the ground (train the trainer..:)) and have documentation in place to hopefully handle majority of eventualities but of course the worry is there that an issue will come up that nobody can resolve and that's where we need to get a bit clever. - Mark from Nabwood (marekbrad) has kindly offered a 3g usb dongle that may or may not work (we'll find out!) in the area but if it did, that combined with logmein on the server could in effect create a remote support effort, or it would need to come back to the charity hq where an internet connection is present to dial in that way.

 

There's a lot of unanswered questions at the moment but I'll know an awful lot more once I get there and see what the objectives for the local teachers are, afterall they are the ones who can really facilitate the change with the best tools.

If you can get any of them to HQ make sure you sign them up to edugeek so worst case someone can pose us questions from afar..

VoIP ?

 

Obviously this would rely on some sort of connection assuming the 3G connection works unless they have a mobile phone that can make use of skype with a skype account ( As ten uk pounds lasts longer on skype then it would on a normal phone call as far as I know ) Obviously they will have there own phone providers out there.

I believe there isn't any phone connection at the schools themselves yet which is partially to blame for a lack of internet connection. (Running copper isn't cheap!).

 

I'm hopeful for a data connection of some sort but cannot assume ! :)

I would also suggest you touch base with other charities which look at providing phone connectivity to villages, whether landline or mobile. OXFAM, Christian Aid and SVP may be able to help you here. Don't have contacts that might be relevant unfortunately.

A quick update,

 

Mr Grumbledook has worked his magic for us :) (Not going to say anymore, he can if he wishes to:))

 

Just received a shiny 16GB Kingston memory stick (no expense spared!) from CP, cheers guys, that's gonna be me owing Joe and Si some proof reading for a while ;)
