Who else gets paid for lunch duties? in Birmingham Especially. We currently recieve £8.49 for 20 mins work.

But we have just been told that for the last 10 + years this is incorrect and that the pay according the LEA is only £4.24 per 20 mins! see below:

"We have recently had an audit and dinner duties were highlighted. Currently dinner duties are paid at £8.49 per session. A ‘session’ should mean the whole dinner time (40 mins), therefore dinner duties should be paid at £4.24 per session (20 mins) "

I Suspect a cost cutting exercise. Anyone now the going rate for Birmingham?

You were being paid an hourly equivalent of £25.47 p/h

Now you will get £12.75 p/h

That still seems pretty high to me!

It depends how you define a 'session', I would argue that you should not be paid for how long you work (20 mins) but rather for covering the dinner session however long that may be, ie you are paid £8.49 to cover lunch and as you still cover lunch you should be paid £8.49 as your duties have not changed.

Think your maths is out

He was getting £25.47 per hour (WOW!)

Now he'll get £12.75 per hour... which is also amazingly good for lunch staff. Our dinner ladies get nothing like that.

Really though, this comes down to what is in your contract for this work. varying your pay can't just be done because they've made a mistake. You may need union advice.

Thanks for the replies, this is not in my contract to do lunch duties but as a technician actually having a lunch has always been impossible so i volunteered years ago to do these duties. Might as well get paid!

Teachers also get paid this much to do duties i think that's why its seems so much.

I might speak to my Union. I would like to know how much other schools pay staff for lunch duties.

We have a similar scheme. If you do a 25 min (half of lunch) duty you either get a free lunch everyday (upto a certain value) or you can opt to be paid. Ours too is around the £20 and hour mark. There is a reason for it being quite high but I can't remember what it is for the life of me now.!

I get a food allowance which would cover a dinner... or I would if I consented to working during my lunch - which falls in line with teachers who get 1 meal per 2 'sessions' of 20 minutes. Last year it was here you go, 1 meal per day something like £1.70 a day it worked out at.

Since I don't consent to such a policy I don't and at the same time am refusing to help anyone during my lunch break - which is fine for the most part, most of the staff are accepting and accomodate me towards the end of a lesson or repay my time with a favour (usually chocolate... mmmm)...

They give a free lunch to teachers who have to work over their lunch break, but not for us! I'd see it as a hindrance, anyway, since lunch is often the best time to go and dive into classrooms to fix things, and we usually get a rush of visitors to the helpdesk then too.

Hmmm, A free lunch worth £1.70 isnt worth it surley? I've decieded like a lot of staff that work here to jack in the duties. Well they can go and employ a superviser to cover the duties , im certainly not going to work my lunch for a lower rate of pay"

We get 5 lunches for 1 25 min duty at about £1.80 a time so 5*£1.80 for 25 minutes work - seems like a reasonable deal to me. Also it saves me having to remember to put cash on our cashless catering system!

Okay not so bad i suppose you dont have to worry about buying lunch.

That's one of the things I like. I also enjoy spending a bit of time out of the office, mixing with the kids.

I open the main ICT classroom at morning break and at lunchtime (20mins + 1 hour) each day and don't get a penny.

I did ask about the meal voucher given to teachers who do lunch duties but was told that support staff only get 30mins for lunch, so I couldn't have one.

On the plus side, it gets me out of the office and I get to know a lot of the students. The latter is especially beneficial as most of the time the students are a great source of all the latest news/gossip going around the school (they have an uncanny ability to find out information that really should be confidential). Also, keeping them on-side means I tend to get an early heads-up about anything they are doing/trying to do on the network that they shouldn't!

Our place we get £12 for a lunch duty this is paid at an hourly rate though the lunch is 45 minutes. As our lunch (support staff not on lunch duty) is half an hour we have to work an extra half hour at the end of the day plus we get a free lunch worth £2. Also as we are lunch duty supervisors we get 15 minutes lunch break. I will add that this rate is dropping by 50% in April so I guess they will be looking for a whole new pile of folk to do it for half the money.

:thumb: It is good to get the know the kids... they respond better if they know you are human being.

It also means you can avoid some of the teaching staff! ;)

I'm sorry, but I can't [insert relevant 'urgent' problem] as I have to supervise this lot

OK, so I felt under paid and under appreciated before....

I get paid £5 for 30 minutes work at a lunchtime :(

And I have to pay for my own lunches, at about £1.60 for a plain sandwich; hot food is £2.70

Lunch duty? Not on your nelly!

We get free lunches anyway, I'm expected to be here 8 till 4 five days a week and get paid for 35 hours; that works out that I'm entitled to an hour for lunch, I don't always take it but that's my choice.

Extra duty - no way! Well, not unless they pay me extra at the same as my normal rate anyway.
