Hi,

 

I am new at using a AD and i am trying to see if there is a way that i can create users so that the generate everything automatically like auto make the user path and home dirs. I am used to using RMManagement Console.

 

The main problem im having is that if a normally want to create a user they sit in different OU's i.e. the year the students join, and i dont want to create users and then all of the home directories are in the workg place. I am trying to basically use the AD structure and apply in on the drive so if i need to look for work from the server its easy.

The RM Management Console does (or at least should) automatically setup user home and profile paths.

 

Not sure I understand your second paragraph. You do know that the RM Management Console creates the user accounts in active directory, right?

No, we still use RMMC for managing user accounts atm, just recall having seen it before and looked quite useful. Have you and had problems then?

Have a look for a program called DSADD (It's a windows server componenet and there should be plenty of info on Microsoft's website)

 

Combine it with some excel work and away you go.

Have a look at the AD-OD integration stuff in the mac section. It has a vbs script that will add the user from a CSV file which will populate the password field, the home dir field, the letter mapped to their home dir and also populate their home dir with a documents folder. It will also create the users in the OU that you specify.

 

It's quite a good script.

 

You will need to create the Home Dir share manually but there is a wiki entry on this site for that, whether using mandatory or roaming profiles. Search for profiles in the Wiki section to get what you need.

Can't you create a default user under each OU and on each default user setup the correct options using the %username% and other variables where relevant and then to create a new user once you have each default user setup just right click on it and copy or something along those lines - cant remember exact steps but re call doing something like that.

Hi thanks for all the replies, we are moving away from RM, NetMgr's decision. What i would like was just a simple app the i could open and say if it a student in year 7 then there home directories and profile are made in the correct place on the server .i.e. jack in yr seven would be in OU users --> Students --> 09 .. and his work will be on server HDD\Users\Students\09\... so the HDD layout is implicated into AD then if we move a user from 09 to 08 there work is moved also, Although i would move a yr7 in yr8, its practical for when we need to manage teacher.

You could have a scheduled task with VBS to do what you're after but it's a lot of messing around.

 

Presumably 09 = year of intake, that's never going to change so you wouldn't need to move the folder anyway?

 

The only thing I could understand you needing to change is group memberships if you've named the groups year 7 and the like (could avoid by giving groups the intake year :-P).

 

Then for the home dir/folder creation create a template user with the \\path\to\folder\%username% add the groups and just 'copy' each user like the guys have said :-)

Hi, Thanks again. Forgive me for being stupid, i managed to get the home directories setup and working brilliantly,thanks, now when the user is created a profile isnt generate (like the home dir is), does that generate when the user logs onto the computer?

Appreciate you have almost solved your problem, but just thought I'd add the program I'm using to the list! We moved away from Learning Network Manager this year, which did a lot of the setup in AD for us, and I was recommended Ad Infinitum from New Fawm Creations in New Zealand. I downloaded the fully functioning 30 day trial, and liked it enough to buy it (they can invoice in sterling) - think it was about NZ$200. You can import from csv, including passwords if you want, set up home directory folders, allocate profiles if wanted and put the users into the correct AD. You can then save the settings for future use. You can also use it to change settings on existing users, and move users around AD. Link here:
