Setting up two servers- 1 for gaming!

Hello!

 

This is my first post on here so i will say 'HELLO!' :D

 

I wondered if anyone knew the best way- i.e. a step-by-step guide almost- on setting up two servers in our school. One for the normal network, file sharing etc... and the other for software and games?

 

*We already have a server set up with a domain using Active Directory and DHCP

 

ALL help is appreciated!

I'm not too sure what a NAS is? We've got about 100 users and around 100 computers at the moment on our network but i've put some nice open-source multiplayer games on the school server. I'm not too keen on running them from there too much though due to hogging server resources!

 

I think we need 2 servers somehow...

will just subscribe and watch but NAS = Network Area Storage such as using open source projects ( think they are reffered to as that ) called Free NAS and open filer as 2 examples ( at least the only ones I am aware of )

So you already have a working network server, and just want one for running as a games server? The best bet would be to buy a cheap server, or even a pc with 2-4gb of ram in, install server 2003/8 on it and set it up as a member server. (server operating system, and part of the domain, but not a domin controller) Then use this to just run the games.

Thanks for that Steve! How do I set it up as a member server? Will I find that somewhere on our current server in DNS or something?

You need to install the operating system ie.server2003 then go to the control panel>system>computer name>change. then enter the name of your domain and then enter the name and password of an account with permission to joint the domain. hope this makes sence;)
