Exploring Science on (CLEO) Moodle

I've got Exploring Science 7, 8 and 9 uploaded to our new MOODLE (we joined the party late from Sharepoint). I've managed to get the ActiveBook working, by linking straight to activebook.swf, which is great.

 

The issue is that none of the interactive content works.

 

I've tried to get it working by linking to wrapper.swf (amongst others) but all I get is a white box with "100%" or "99%" in the top corner

 

The content itself is fine - going straight to the .swf files in the content\ab folder and running them individually works - it's just that they won't run joined together. The "Go Interactive" button functionality doesn't work either - the icons appear but don't do anything when you click on them.

 

Any ideas? anyone?

It's hard enough getting these to run on an internal network, but eventually we did. The main issue was java on the clients. Don't know if this is your problem.

Sorry to butt in to this one - similar question? I played with the cd's for that long(found it was the zipping software in the end) that I got fed up and phoned the digital support.

 

'No problem' they said, had the cd with content within 3 days(only the student version, Active book). Put it on, brilliant - or so I thought! I had a good look at the structure of the cd - that's when I discovered that the only thing stopping me from uploading it was the stupid zipping software. Downloaded different one, zipped it and uploaded the teacher version(Active teach). It was a massive upload(1.5Gb) but it went on happily.

 

The only thing is - it's not usable! The content is not searchable at all within the vle, the only way to get to it is via the menu page. That's ok for students but if teachers wanted to use the teacher side of it the menu page took 25 minutes to load yesterday. Today it was only about 5 minutes but no teacher will use that! They will just run it off the network which makes it a school-access only resource - bit pants!

 

The other content packs we have for vle are searchable(by topic) so I just wonder whether the tagging is not quite there, or is it because AB/AT is designed to run from the menu page?

Connecting Science stuff seemed to go on OK.

Glad you have posted as there really is a need for software to work on VLE's not just as an added option but as a main source of sharing the resource. If companies are not complying to this new standard in schools then they shouldn't be saying their software is VLE compatible, in my opinion.

It's barely network compatible either! to get it to work on the internal network I've had to

(1) Install it

(2) Download the patchy thing from their knowledgebase to resolve the first "white screen of death" issue (after which the splash page at the front works, followed by another WSOD)

(3) Create a batch file to map a drive letter each time a user runs it as this "network compatible" software can't even cope with UNC paths for goodness sake!

 

Won't work without a mapped drive letter... Hmmm.... not much chance of getting THAT to fly on Moodle then, have I?!

I seem to recall having to get some replacement VLE files from digital support at Pearson. I am not in the office at the moment so cannot check for sure however if you email the tech support email address they'll help you out.

Unfortunately the cd I have IS the vle version from digital support(Active Book only) - they burned it for me!

 

No joy with it being searchable though; you do have to navigate through the index page. Which means I can't link it to a particular activity, just the main menu - frustrating!
