Denying roof access to lead thieves without killing or serious injury

Anti-climb paint a) doesn't work b) gets on our kid's uniforms. Sentry guns are a favourite option within IT and DT, but implementation will probably be frowned upon by Plod. Catching them so far hasn't worked - Plod is unable to prosecute/apprehend for various reasons.

 

Deterrent is the aim.

 

I want something that either makes it impossible (or sufficiently unpleasant) to access our roofs that they're discouraged long-term. I doubt needle spikes on the wall-facing side of drainpipes is legal though.

 

What else is there? - the roofs are slate and the main issue is broken tiles and leaks when it rains. This is costing us a lot to fix.

We had the same problem at the last school I worked at. They kept coming back every night but running off before anybody arrived.

 

I managed to trap them on the roof one night and call the police. Said I had them trapped but was advised to "Let them go", or I would have been in trouble. By the time the PCSO turned up (an hour later), they were long gone

Suggest to some of the more 'interesting' kids that they should have a "Who can throw the most dog doo and/or glass bottles onto the roof" competition? The lead thieves might come back one more time but probably not twice!

The bird Deterrent stuff should probably work if you put it around the edge of the roof line.

Or maybe some nice sensor based flood lights so the area gets covered in lighting when they are activated.

Bird spikes might be worth trying. Currently trying to convince smt that roof-based cctv-relay triggered paint mines are a good idea (provided I can guarantee it won't get on the windows / be visible from ground level).

 

They're not convinced

 

I'd think even our towns cctv operators could pick out the kids walking home at 3am looking like the tango man.

We had the last of our lead nicked during the summer holidays (right above the server room - but thankfully no leaks).

 

Everywhere we did have lead has now been replaced with the non-lead replacement. So they hopefully now won't be back to cause anymore damage.
