We are currently using Symantec Backup Exec 12.5 with a Quantum tape drive.

But when full backups run the tape ejects itself and the backup doesnt run obviously :)

Just before the school broke up for the 6 weeks holidays it stopped doing it, but now its doing it again.

Anybody have any ideas what this may be? It is only while running full back ups.

check the retension/protection time on the media set the tape/s belong to.

the alerts log should give you the answers you need.

You should be getting some kind of alert message to tell you why it is ejecting. When this happened to me on a repeated basis, it turned out that the backup had been running (look at the times and the byte count) but then the tape was ejected because it had been filled up and the alert was asking for an overspill tape in order to complete the job. Quantum drive too. Look at your byte count and see if you may be getting full.

Thanks for all your ideas, i will have a look at this tomorrow and then i will post up with what i find :). When you say it could be getting full we have set the tape to overrite itself so should that still happen?

It'll overwrite on another tape though, not the one it's just backed up to? So if you insert a new tape it'll continue if it is in fact the tape that is full which is causing this problem. Look at the backup size and this will give you an indication.

Don't want to hijack the thread, but it seems a logical place to ask for help with a related issue.

I use a Quantum with 12.5 and each Friday I run a full backup to a single tape which I remove and stored elsewhere. We had a power failure over the weekend (no the UPS's couldn't keep it all going for long enough) so I ran the Friday full backup last night.

Now when I try to move the tape from the slot to the mailslot I get "CAN'T COMPLETE MOVE: System Lock, Chk Bkup SW Cfg". I've checked the job logs and nothing seems to be wrong. I've even run an Inventory which completed OK.

Any ideas?

We had a similar issue here and it took ages to sort out.

Dell helpdesk [who supplied the tape library] eventually identified the problem: We had the tape drive standing on a desk with a [very light] switch standing on top of it [this was a temporary arrangement while I reorganised the server rack]

Dell came out and did the repair to the library and it has worked ever since. Apparently there is very little room inside the library where the magazines sit [left and right]

Needelss to say the tape library is now properly housed in the server rack.

Do you have any items [at all] sitting on top of your tape library?

Hardware: Dell PV-124T

PS: You also need to make sure that the tape library does not have the named drivers installed but rather is 'Unknown Medium Changer' [see attached picture]

I assume you have done a right click -> unlock library on it in backup exec? I have to unlock mine each week after backup exec locks it after the export.

Sadly Dave, no, it's in a rack well clear of everything. Thanks anyway.

Thanks for the post - where exactly in BE are you right-clicking? I'm looking in Media in BE and I have the tapes in a Media Set called Friday. There's no library that I can see and there's no right click/unlock on the media set or tape!

DMcCoy: As you were - after right clicking everything in sight I found the unlock under the Quantum 2 Device.

I've got my tape back now - thought I'd need a hammer and chisel.

Thanks for the help.

Just to confirm what Moggy and DMcCoy have said.

Symantec Backup Exec using a carousel Quantum Superloader will lock device after performing backups.

In SBE, Devices Tab, under the server find the Quantum device, Right Click and select UNLOCK.

Now you should be able to eject tapes.
