ICT_GUY Posted August 10, 2009 Posted August 10, 2009 Just a quickie, my xbox 360 died after 3 years 3 months. After talking to trading standards, they say I have a case for free repair or refund. I bought it from Eplay, which went into administration in 2007, so I have been advised to claim against the credit card company. Just thought that this might be of use to others, also I will post when I get an answer.

LansITGuy Posted August 10, 2009 Posted August 10, 2009 If you are suffering from the red ring of death, give MS a call. They are repairing this problem for free even after the three year point. My XBox went at about the same age and was repair in about a week.

I would contact Microsoft and get your console repaired for free. You never know, you might get one of their newer consoles which is better engineered. Hopefully Microsoft will learn from their mistakes with their next console!
andy_nic Posted August 10, 2009 Posted August 10, 2009 when mine died, i didn't know that microsoft had extended the Xbox 360's manufacturer's warranty to three years for hardware failure problems. So i bought a new one got 3 free games and the new one has HDMI, and made a clock out of my old one:p

There was a hint at the E3 I think it's just like the playstation to the PSone, smaller and faster spec. however the motherboards are always being updated now both the processor and graphics are now 45mm from 90mm when the console first came out and the addition of HDMI, and one other thing is that i saw on a website that the main reason for xbox 360 red ring of death has be sorted, But only time will tell. Haptic Posted August 10, 2009 Posted August 10, 2009 the main reason for ROD on xbox 360's was that the GPU would overheat and lift from the Motherboard, there addition of a extra heat sink for the gpu didnt really do much good, One of the best ways of preventing ROD is to replace the xclamp holding the heatsink to the board with a xclamp replacement kit, this pulls the heatsink into closer contact to the gpu preventing it from overheating, that and also replacing the cheap thermal paste with a good quality one like quick silver or alike, I personally would then purchase the XCM fan for extra cooling,
Michael Posted August 10, 2009 Posted August 10, 2009 As andy_nic stated there are several motherboard 'revisions' and processor enhancements which cost Microsoft less to produce and churn out less heat also, so it's a win-win situation. Microsoft will inevitably release a smaller altogether revised console, as will Sony with their PS3 at some point. Microsoft are also set to enter the portable games market, as both Sony and Nintendo have portable consoles. I just hope those Microsoft gamers won't have to carry a power brick with them as with the XBOX 360. Microsoft will then eventually release a new console altogether, most likely with a Blu-ray drive despite the rubbish they keep coming out with, with regards to streaming content directly to customers. Not everyone has a beefy internet connection, so movies/games will still be available on disc for quite some time to come! Of course the other problem is that games generally are becoming bigger and more detailed, so they use more space. The size of games are increasing at a much quicker rate than what broadband in the UK can currently handle. Hopefully Microsoft will do a better job and test hardware properly and not just slap components together that weren't designed to work together. It was all to do with Microsoft getting their console out before Sony, but then ironically Sony released their console late. A whole year later and the failure rate of PS3 is extremely low, a few percent at most compared to Microsoft's 60% or something ridiculous like that. Microsoft have most likely made an overall loss because of this major oversight!
