I went into the apple store (we call it a green grocer) and got some braeburns, russets, cox's and granny smiths. I like russets best.

 

Anyway, I think I'm done winding you up now (you take the bait every time... it's like when someone calls Marty McFly "chicken" ).

 

To prove to you I'm not completely closed minded, I have actually recommended macs to a few people in the past... it all depends what they've wanted to do. I'd never recommend one to my Mum, but I would to my brother. Different kinds of users basically.

 

Wouldn't have one myself... I'm an Open Source fanboy

What is the best opertaing system to use at home?

 

Enthusiasts will always choose something new or something other than Windows. In most cases XP Home will do everything you require from it. Most new machines today will come installed with Vista Home Premium though, unfortunately. With Windows 7 on the horizon, come Christmas there should be Windows 7 machines everywhere for sale.

 

If you need just the OS a few places still stock/sell XP. Google is your friend.

Reaper works really well under WINE. I get 20ms latency using PCLinuxOS, Wine and Wineasio.

 

The Reaper forums have quite a few guides about getting Reaper working optimally under Linux/Wine.

 

Oooh nice one. I've never had much success with Wine, but if it's working for others I may have to check it out myself.

 

I'm running 64bit Ubuntu, do you think that will make a difference?

I think, Ubuntu(Kubuntu, Xubuntu) or Mandrive is better for you, because its freeware and you need no pay for Windows-linece. I think so, that you would like to set all properties, but not a part, like in Windows.

I use Ubuntu 9.04, than you may ask me about.

For my parents (bit of word processing, digital photos, web and email) it's Ubuntu. Why? Central repository for all the software they need + patches.

I have to agree with that. I kitted out most of my family with Ubuntu now, hardly have to do tech support at all. Techs forget that non-power users do actually find gnome easy to use and does all their needs.

Well ive got OSX on my home PC and one of my work PCs. Xp on the other work PC. Windows7 on my laptop, and tinyXP on my old laptop/netbook.

 

TBH i cant wait for my HD to come back from WD so that i can get windows back on my home PC. OSX is driving me up the wall. Its great in alot of ways but one massive thing puts me off; the mouse! It just feels so clumbsy and slow. (Oh and while we're at it the keyboard; layout and missing keys! grr) And as has been said, i dont want to wait while a VM/other OS loads just so i can have a quick play on a game/do something i take for granted on Windows.

 

Reason i went for OSX is for music production but after many months of playing i cant find any reasons why its better for me; Propellerheads Reason is exactly the same program regardless of which OS its on...

Dodgy jokes aside, if you don't need specific software, I would try SimpleMEPIS and Linux Mint
