Stop them Downloading!

Hi Guys,

I'm back after a long absence! Woo! Now i have a confused look on my face after being asked this question "Is there a way of stopping the students downloading the movie files from channel 4 clipbank" Now for those who haven't come across it Clipbank is a server which has data sent to it from channel 4 which has educational value!! Now the vid clips are great but we are worried the students will begin to fill our server with everyone saving the same clips to thier homefolders! So i guess what i'm asking is,,,

Does anyone know how this could be done, i've been looking at group policies etc, but at the moment not getting anywhere!

If you have W2K3 - R2 there are file filters you can use.

Already suggested that one unfortunatley the students create .mpg in Media And IT classes and need to be able to save in that format! Thanks for the suggestion though.

Do you have a media server or a shared area? If so you could create folders and set permissions on them for different year groups etc so they save there work .mpg's there and then block .mpgs from there home directories. Not exactly what you asked I know but as a work around. It would just make it easier to monitor what the little darlings are up to.

Not a bad idea but again our little darlings are known for trashing each others work if they can, so a shared area would prove to be more work than we have time for. We do have a shared area for the staff and thats enough hassle. lol

In that case set a quota limit on the students and then its up to them to keep it tidy. It does mean groups appear at your door suggesting that everything in there area is work related but after a look and a slap on the wrist they soon learn ish.

Again a perfectly good idea and one i suggested myself but again the chief knocked me back!

How about a separate mapped drive that media files can be saved to that is only available in the ICT suites?

The kiddies would still trash each others work. It's at times like this i wish i worked at a nice school where the kids have respect.

I meant something like a 2nd home directory, personal to the kid but only mapped when logged in on an ICT Suite PC.

Is it from a different url?

You could put the url path into IE's restricted sites list which can block downloads using GP.

I *think* WMP should ignore them and VLC definately will.

What if you make a shared location specifically for Clipbank videos, and get students to check if thier video is there before they download it

I will look into that tomorrow! for now my head is spinning with GPO and OU's and rebuilding machines in Suites. Need to unplug for a while

Ok now i'm being told that i need to do this with a group policy. I tried adding the url as a restricted site in IE but it say's It's alreay in one of the zones???? I'm lost now and he isn't back untill tomorrow. Ahh well any advise would be appreciated.

cant you download the files into a read only shared area? that way they dont have to download any files.

I don't think that sort of lockdown is possible in Group Policy.

 

The best you might be able to do is remove right click access.

If you create an shared folder you can use the CREATOR/OWNER-settings so that people can create files, read all files, but not change/delete files created by others (or by themselves)

Couldn't you just punish a student and make them download them all and put them on a local shared drive/intranet so everyone can use/view them?

That would be a great idea but not what i'm looking for. I think i have found a way by adding the site to a restriced zone in IE then using GP to stop them downloading from there?? not sure if it will work though!

Why not find out what videos are required a week before hand, download them, have them on a mapped drive for the kids, give them READ ONLY access. That way you can download them as needed, and your servers are not overloaded. We went down that route and it worked perfectly.

The video's are stored on the clipbank server. think the boss is looking for minimal mess around as we have enough to do when the staff and kids are in.
