AFAIK its a upgrade license so you should really upgrade shouldn't you if your wanting to use it on your agreement (although I never do)
sted Posted July 17, 2009 Posted July 17, 2009 (edited) i was under the impression europe wasnt getting an upgrade version they are going to sell hte full version at upgrade price (so probably still more than the damn yanks pay as according to ms 1$=1£) and if ms have to remove ie shouldn't apple remove safari from macs and possibly even the iphone? Diello Posted July 17, 2009 Posted July 17, 2009 Yes, Apple does a "Microsoft" worse than Microsoft ever did, but Apple aren't as successful as Microsoft, so nothing will happen. Plus they're the media darlings. If you become successful then you shall be attacked for doing whatever made you successful in the first place... apparently you should play fair and help your competitors catch up to you. This is usually when the Apple/Opera fan boys will come out shouting about how what Apple do with bundling, and hardware tie-in don't forget, is an entirely different thing. Getting to the point - You'll need to check with your licensing expert... we all will!... but I think SA works on upgrading the LICENSE you have, not a SOFTWARE upgrade as you see it from the consumer PoV, so we should be OK. 1
karlieb Posted July 20, 2009 Posted July 20, 2009 If you have a School Agreement then you will be able to install Windows 7 for no extra cost as part of your agreemnet. The EU issue has no bearing on this. What you will not be able to do is migrate from Win XP to Win 7 using upgrade media you will need to do a clean install of Win 7. I would suggest that this is the best way to approach this anyway to stop any legacy hardware/software issues coming with you and messing up your new setup. It is supposed to be available to all volume license customers on 1st September although I have read that it may be released in mid-August too. So you will be able to download the relevant media and get access to your volume licenses for Windows 7 from the Microsoft MVLS website.

karlieb Posted July 22, 2009 Posted July 22, 2009 When I spoke to MSFT last week they didn't know exactly what version of Windows 7 would be included in the School Agreement, although it wasn't one of the licensing specialists I spoke to. Assuming it follows the same principle as the previous agreement which included Vista Enterprise then I would expect that it would be for Windows 7 Enterprise - which does include BitLocker and BitLocker2Go. They should do.

I'm hoping that we'll be getting access to Windows 7 on August 7th as per When will you get Windows 7 RTM? - Windows 7 Team Blog - The Windows Blog Ray - do you know, or could you find out, if Windows Server 2008 R2 is being released at the same time as Windows 7 to volume license customers with SA? I know from the server team blog that they said they're aligned with the same GA and RTM release times as the Windows 7 team, but it would be nice to know so we can start planning. We're hoping to setup a 2008 R2 network this summer rather then have to do 2008 -> 2008 R2.

Looks like we'll be rolling out 2008 R2 then!
