markesmith Posted June 30, 2009 Posted June 30, 2009 We have a dozen new Tosh Satillite Pro A300 laptops, we're having a problem with DVD playback. Some DVDs play fine while others are not recognised and the drive spins and spins and make a fairly high pitched whineing noise. All are proper shop bought DVDs, mainly films. I don't see it as a codec issue as some DVDs play fine. I was wondering if there are more than one type of DVD disc or a format not known to play in newer drives. Thanks.
ICT_GUY Posted June 30, 2009 Posted June 30, 2009 Dual layer / single layer? DVD drives are the cheapest bit of kit in a typical system and the most prone to failure.
LeMarchand Posted June 30, 2009 Posted June 30, 2009 How well have the discs been treated? I quite often get called in to find that it looks as if someone has been using the discs as serving/carving dishes for large quantities of Bolivia's finest.
redsnappa Posted June 30, 2009 Posted June 30, 2009 It may be copy protection in the retail dvd film that prevent them playing on computer dvd drives. Sony pulled that scam a couple of years ago, their audio CDs would install a rootkit on users computers that prevented that cd playing on computers

Michael Posted July 2, 2009 Posted July 2, 2009 Personally I think it's a drive issue reading some discs rather than a codec issue, as I presume the disc label doesn't even appear in Windows Explorer? It does happen time to time, but generally on older machines. A300's are still relatively new.

mac_shinobi Posted July 2, 2009 Posted July 2, 2009 if its an older drive - check for a firmware update - may help with regards to reading the discs - that or get a laser lense cleaner and use that on the drive to clean the lense of any dirt / dust etc I would also try VLC - if VLC does not work then thats a good indication that it may be the age of the drive or the drive not supporting the newer discs ( which you can tell if you get nero info - free download if you google it ) and that will tell you what the drive supports in terms of discs etc
