  1. The is nothing worse than printing photos and other work for displays only to find some thicko techy who does not kno how to use quotas has reduced the size of them so the maximum size they can be printed is say 8x12 cm which is usless for display work.
  2. 1 computer for me 1 laptop for the wife. I do enough geeky stuff at work so it's the last thing I want to do in my free time. For me IT is just a job.
  3. Our school shool is trying to deploy Open office accross our networ but cannot get rid of its stupid registration process.
  4. It may be copy protection in the retail dvd film that prevent them playing on computer dvd drives. Sony pulled that scam a couple of years ago, their audio CDs would install a rootkit on users computers that prevented that cd playing on computers
  5. Little knowledge etc.....
  6. You give up too easily.
  7. Just because I criticise ubuntu that does not mean that I hate it, its that sometimes it forces me to use skills I last used when using windows 3.1back in 1995. It' like this uninstall query, why cant i just click an app (or its tick box) then click a button that says uninstall or word to that effect? "apply changes" means nothing it's just lazy programming.
  8. I have Ubuntu installed and it has started to run really slowly, how do I uninstall apps that I do not need to help speed things up.http://www.misco.co.uk/applications/SearchTools/item
  9. I know a school that uses dlink kit and there is nothing but problems with signal drop offs etc
  10. It's not microsoft that's killing netware it the fault of people who refuse to buy it.
  11. Uninstall quicktime.
  12. To get a mouse to work? Not in over ten tears No way, a mailserver is quite a complex system so command line in linux & windows & any other OS is more useful than gui in those instances but, now way will I edit text to get a mouse scroll wheel to work in any OS!! All I'm saying is that if ubuntu wants to capture the market from serious windows users it has to work straight of the disk with no faffing about getting the basics to work thus leaving the users brain cell alone to concentrate on the really complex matters.
  13. If Ubuntu doesn't do what you want try another disto... Doh! That’s like saying if you can’t swim try different water Gotta really ask the question why would you be running X (GUI) on a server anyway ? I’ dyslexic why you got a problem with that? I a very competent windows user I was just trying to find out if the grass was really greener the other side of the fence, It is not all I’ve found just ankle deep mud Just to get a basic mouse to work??? Now way not me I also remember editing autoexec.bats & msdex to get CDrom drives & mice to work with Win 3.11 but now way would I edit text to get one to work with a modern OS that sort of thing should be fixed by now.
  14. If users had to install drivers or geek tweek lines of code just to get a basic wheel mouse to work windows would never have got the monoply that they have. Ubuntu need to learn this or it will aways be seen as a coders playground and not a serious OS
  15. So you reckon that all those people buying those pretty little netbooks will use them for coding on their titchy 7" screens and even tinier keyboards, of course they are.
  16. UBUNTU SUCKS..... the life out of my graphics card My server has ubuntu hh but it can only manage a screen resolution of 800x600 the graphix card is a fully working ATI 7500. In the screen resolution options ubuntu offers me resolutions of 800x600, 640x480 & 320x240, excuse me for a second Mr Ubuntu but what the hell use are those resolutions this is 2009 not1990!! I've been on ubuntu forums and it seems I can coax higher screen resolutions out of ubuntu if open an archaic text editor and type what seems to be gibberish for the next 15 eons, (They also said I had to do the same for a mouse that does not work properly with ubuntu hh) No No No No No, I do not want to have to type thousand of lines of text just to get a basic stuff to work with ubuntu, I just want them to work. The Ubuntu techs have got it so wrong, I will NOT sit in front of a text editor for hours on end fixing their screw ups, if something does not work with microsoft they chuck a few dollars at the prob and issue a patch simple. I forgot to tell you lot of the time I ran the updates that Ubuntu said needing installing, the install finished, my server rebooted, I logged in and displayed in front of me was a completely different desktop layout/colour, different Icons, and different start menu, how mad is that, crazy, crazy & weird!! would that happen with Win 3.1 No, Win95 No, Win 2k No, XP No, Vista No, not even Win ME would through a wobbler like that. If every I dip my toes in to test the linux waters they keep get badly bitten and mauled by bugs I'm hardly likely to stay with or recommend the system am I. Phew!!!

  18. Linux is not yet ready for schools if you see my previous thread my mouse wheel will not work with ubuntu even Windows 95 would work with a mouse that has a wheel straight out the box. Can you imagine techies in schools would have to plow though pages of command line each time a mouse was changed. If getting a mouse to work with linux is problematic can you imaging the issues with getting other weird hardware that schools such as data loggers, visualisers and interactive whiteboards working with linux.
  19. My xorg file is shown below, is this correct? #
  20. Most of the linux supporters here seem to think that school kid only need a OS & Office software. What about all the english, maths, scienc and other educational software that is used in schools, are there open souurce equivalent for those?
  21. what is an Xorg.conf and where would I find it?
  22. I've installed Ubuntu server to an old Compaq server just to ha a play with linux but one thing bugs me, the mouse wheel does not work. I've tested the mouse with XP and it works perfectly, the mouse is an old Microsoft Trekker. Is there a way of getting the mouse wheel to work with ubuntu?
  23. I've opened some of my word documents in Open Office writer and some documents especially if they contain a lot of pictures lose their formatting so open office just is not viable for me. I
  24. http://www.edugeek.net/forums/educational-jobs/24096-ict-technician-st-margaret-ward-catholic-school-arts-college.html This advert is illegal as it breaks the anti age discrimination laws by asking for 21-25. The school could and should face prosecution for allowing this to be published
  25. Too much command line is out of the question as I am dyslexic
