Loading takes about 5-20 seconds (pupil accounts), staff take longer (up to 3 minutes). The applying your personal settings box, only flashes up briefly on pupil accounts (not long enough to read what it says). With staff it can stay for up to 20 seconds.

It depends on the profile size... The kids' Mandatory profiles whizz through; staff roaming profiles vary depending on how much they've listened to me rabbitting on about not saving things onto their desktops!

I take a nap.

:D

It takes 20-25 secs to apply personal settings here and it dont seem to matter if its wired or wireless. I've stripped it down to just domain policy and its still the same time.

Was wondering if i could speed it up some how.

Dont have roaming profiles. All have generic profiles which reset after every log off/log on. All documents saves default to U:\ (for staff) and H:\ (for kids). Staff have logins which are just there initials (EO, JH, etc) but if 2 have the same initials, we then include 2nd letter of surname (KSh, KSu). Roaming profiles causes nothing but aggro here as we had 1 member of staff having a roaming profile of 9GB!!!

Re-direct application data and desktop folders to the member of staffs home folder, makes a world of difference to the speed the profile loads at. The main reason for slow logins is teachers saving anything and everything to their desktop, because the desktop is normally part of the profile and few people re-direct it, whenever you logon or logoff it drags the entire folder over the network.

Is there a way to see what happens during applying personal settings?

The profiles are mandatory and only 1.5 meg.

Turn on "userenv debug logging" - you'll then get a log file telling you what's happening.

Yeah I looked there before i started this thread.

@srochford: Thanks for the advise, i've redirect everything already and i'm having a look at the log. I think i might be something in the ntuser.man thats causing a delay but not sure what yet.

@webman: nice logon times, how do you do it? especially as you have roaming profiles..

We just have a standard RM CC3 network, nothing special. In fact, it will be 7 years old this December.

Ok in the log I've found the ~ 20 sec delay but it doesnt point to why.

USERENV(690.908) 11:56:02:798 LibMain: Process Name: C:\WINDOWS\system32\rundll32.exe
USERENV(3fc.f88) 11:56:22:814 UserPolicyCallback: Setting status UI to Applying your personal

Any ideas anyone?

XP SP3? XP SP2 had a hotfix to fix a 20 second logon delay with redirected folders, but this is included in SP3.

apeo also remember you can use verbose logon message in GP.

That file download works for me too btw.

Can you post what you have redirected?

There is a SP3 issue with redirected folders too.
