Good morning all,

Me and my colleague are very frustrated and need urgent advice.

I was wondering if anyone knows what the average pay scale is for an ICT Manager and a SIMS Manager / senior technician in a school in the south east region?

The reason I ask is because every other school in the region both posts seem to be on a salary scale up from us.

Also is it a general thing that IT support staff only get four weeks holiday a year (which can't be taken during term time) because several people working in the same position have questioned me as to why I work the holidays and say to me that they're not expected to go in during the holidays unless there's a big project on.

Please advise.

Regards

Dan

Not sure if anyone has done a large survey but a lot of IT staff in schools only work overtime in holidays if a big project is on. A lot of others work all year around with only 4 ish weeks of holiday. I find IT contracts are a mix of the two there is no common one. Generally speaking those that get full school holidays take home less pay.

Average pay might not be the best way to look at it. Pay change a lot based on the size of a school. An IT manager in a small school might be as low as 18k while I would expect a larger secondary school is 23k+

As Pottsey says it does vary a great deal.

We are all term time + 4 so we work all term + 4 weeks of school hols. The actual amount of paid hols are 4 weeks + bank hols rising to 5 weeks + bank hols with length of service. That means our guys all get paid for term+4+4 weeks hols + bank holiday. Roughly speaking they get paid for 48 or 49 weeks out of 52.

In salary terms it does vary a great deal. I see NM jobs between 20k and 28k. Odd ones are paid into the low 30k area. I'm lucky in that my boss sees the value and pays much better than that.

Our senior tech earns around £19k and our trainees around £12k.

We're allowed to take 5 days of our annual leave in term time but I never have done yet!

I'm in Slough, ICT Network Manager was 25-28k, not telling you my exact wage though...

Trainee technicians get 16-18k

Technicians get 20-21k

We work the holidays, we can't take off time during term time. We are allowed 2 weeks in the summer holidays, we always need cover regardless of summer holidays so we have to work between us 3 to decide upon holidays. We receive 25 days holiday.

The pay scales depend on qualifications, eg., degree, MS certs, A+ etc.

Hope this is some help.

Most network manager jobs are classed as full time so therefore you get only 4 weeks holiday unless long service adds more holidays. Other's are classed as term time only and don't get paid for holidays and this is reflected in the lower wage.

Not sure for yourself but my contract allows me one week holiday during term time by discretion of the head.

I would get a copy of contract and jobdescription..(dont laugh some people actually have both)... lol.

Can't be bad for you.

Two of the team of three work holidays here, myself included.

We're allowed to take 10 days during term time now.

If that's directed at me... you haven't seen the state of the IT within the school and the amount of work we have to do :-(

My situation is a little different, I think, because I live in another country (NL)...

I have 24 days off + I work 40 h/week and I get paid for 36, those other 4 hours are for vacation. So I have about 50-55 days for vacation and normal 'days off' a year.

I get paid € 33019,- (that's about 27882 Pounds) per year (before taxes).

I also have a lot of overtime, so I'm free every wednesday afternoon until the summerbreak. (just 32 minutes left :D)

If other schools are paid by the same LA you can certainly ask for job evaluation.

As for working/holidays - quite a few on here work all year round but can only take time off in school hols. IMHO this is very unfair -I know a couple of guys who have pointed out that this is not on, and also argued that as big things can get done in the holidays, it is a good idea to allow term-time holidays for techs at quiet times rather than lose them when you really need them.

As for salaries, a techie down here only gets about £16k

NM varies from about £24 to £30 depending on the size of the school

The minimum is set in the green book if your are employed by LA or the school follows the LA/local goverment agreement.

6.Working Time

6.1 The standard working week for full time employees is 37 hours

(36 in London). This may be calculated over a period other than

a week in accordance with the provisions of Part 3.

6.2 Employees who are required to work non-standard patterns of

work shall be compensated in accordance with the provisions of

Section 2 of Part 3.

6.3 Variations to the established working week or patterns of work

will be reasonable and subject to adequate notice.

6.4 Working arrangements will comply with relevant Health and

Safety legislation, including the European working time

directive and its associated UK legislation.

7. Leave

7.1 Public Holidays

Employees shall, irrespective of length of service, be entitled to

a holiday with a normal day’s pay for each of the statutory,

general and public holidays as they occur.

7.2 Annual Leave

The minimum paid annual leave entitlement is twenty days with

a further five days after five years of continuous service. The

entitlement as expressed applies to five day working patterns.

For alternative working patterns an equivalent leave

entitlement should be calculated.

2.5

7.3 The annual leave entitlement of employees leaving or joining

an authority is proportionate to their completed service during

the leave year.

7.4 Extra Statutory Holidays

Employees shall have an entitlement to two extra statutory days

holiday, the timing of which shall be determined by the

authority in consultation with the recognised Trade Unions with

a view to reaching agreement, or added to annual leave by local

agreement.

This may be the minimum you may and likely to have more if unions locally have negotiated it.

our school doesnt have a network manager! as the NM job pays £28,353-£32,475, scp 34-39 so to be cheap they decided to pay the NM as Systems Officer £23,473-£27,573, scp 28-33.

but he is full time. me and the other guy are term time only.

As someone in a senior technician role (I'm between the NM and the other technicians), I'm on pay range 5 in my area, which currently works out to £24,412 - £26,516.

I get 23 days holiday. My contract states this must be taken during school closure periods, though in practice I am permitted to take it largely when I choose.

Here (A NottsCC Technology College), we have no "network manager", we have a Snr Tech (myself 10yrs - Scale 5) and 2 technicians (both on Scale 3, been here 3 and 6 years)

We are'nt allowed to take time off at all during term-time, and as from last summer, only 2 weeks in the summer. Ideally I would work as much as the summer as possible, if we could take a week off term-time. As like all schools, the summer holiday is when most projects get done.

When I was a tech, I was on term time plus 2 weeks. No time off allowed at all during term time. Same restrictions and hours apply though I'm not really on the tech team anymore, I assist a member of SLT with his workload after the team was cut down and I moved departments.

Salary is about £16-17k a year. No idea how much I'd get full time but

Here in Luton myself and the Techie are term-time only + 1 week, so in theory we get all of the school holidays except for 5 days which we work outside of termtime when we want to. In pratice, we end up being owed at least 15 days of time off in lieu for all the work we actually have to do in holidays which (as we all here know) just can't get done during term time with the systems being in use all day every day.

As "ICT Manager" I get a little over £18k a year, which isn't too awful considering it is only supposed to be for 40-odd weeks of working time.

Me and the Techie are looking into getting a job evaluation and asking for ful-time contracts as we so obviously need at least 4 week's worth more of working time than we are currently contracted for, and we now have 2 years' worth of proof of that!
