  1. We have key switches on the door releases in the most vulnerable areas instead of a break glass, which all staff have a key to; in the event of a fire alarm the doors automatically release anyway. We have risk assessments in place and this has all been check by the council's Health and Safety team.
  2. Senior IT Technician | Pioneer House School
  3. Have a really tight budget this year, so had to make do with this: Dell Precision T3600 Intel Xeon E5-1620 3.60GHz 16GB RAM 256GB SSD AMD FirePro W5000 Creative SB Recon 3D Roll on the new financial year!
  4. We use Zoom H1 recorders, they are about £80. We have used some expensive kit in the past, but these have been just as good and easier to use. We just use Audacity to convert multiple .wav files to mp3 (although they do come with Wavelab).
  5. Last year I went on the following course - Data Protection: An A-Z Guide by Act Now (Act Now Training) It was a small group of 6/8 and the information provided was more than adequate for ensuring that schools meet their legal obligations - it was one of the best courses that I have been on. You only need more advanced training if you are going to be the data controller and are required to deal with queries as part of your job.
  6. When I ran it on my computer, the XML file was saved to C:\Program Files\SIMS\Sims.net\CASPA Pupil Data 2012. Have you already looked there?
  7. They are correct in stating 'black and white' printer - look at all the printer manufacturers websites!
  8. I am currently reviewing our current backup system; looking to get a Dell PowerVault TL-4000 tape library and two LT05 drives. Do any of you use the TL-4000 or can you recommend an alternative. Many Thanks
  9. I spoke to Valiant about two weeks ago; they said that they had to recall all Roamer Too devices due to a manufacturing fault and that they would be available for delivery in May. Now I don't know if I was just being fobbed off or not.
  10. Yes did it countless times, good job I did becuase a lot of stuff that was agreed on the plans hadn't been done. It was only on the long walk rounds that I picked up stuff that was missing / in the wrong place, and then was able to get it sorted before the contractors were off site. Some areas of the build you won't be able to access untill very late on, so it is important to build up a good relationship with the LA Project Manager (they are supposed to look out for the school / LA), which ours did. Make sure there is enough power points to each network point (e.g. for scanners / speakers), also where the teachers desk will go in relation to the IWBs. You need to go in to every detail, otherwise you will find that things are out of place (we even checked radiators weren't going to be under interactive whiteboard). I was also involved in the furniture layouts, so I could makes sure the locations worked, also blinds, so I could make sure rooms had blackout blinds where needed.
  11. View ==> Design Mode for the Form. Then on the property sheet==> Navigation Buttons = No.
  12. Could you modify this. IF Question - MrExcel Message Board
  13. The thing is I am a member of SLT with responsibility for strategic management of ICT. It took 18 months for the LA to come back to us saying they had lost my job description; now they keeping asking for silly bits of information. Will take another 2 years at this rate!!!
  14. Currently the ICT / Network Manager job descriptions only go upto SO1 in my LEA; so this is why I am strugging to get my job evaluated (must say the school is fully behind me).
  15. As anyone at SO2 or above been through job evaluation? If so, what is your job title? Did you receive a drop in pay? I have currently been waiting over two years to have my JD evaluated, if I worked at SO1 or below then I wouldn't of had a problem. Many Thanks
  16. I always use a USB pen drive, works fine (done over 90 installs).
  17. I have been through 3 OFSTED inspections; two with one school where they have spoke to me on both occassions and once with another school where they left me completely alone. Both times I went in the meeting with the ICT Co-ordinator, although they did ask quite a few questions that I had to answer. Nothing to it, both inspectors were really down to earth. Good Luck.
  18. I think this is easily solved - do the job descriptions of the IT Techs in your school state that they will provide support in all ICT lessons? If so, that is the school's choice. The role of the IT Techs is to support where applicable the Network Manager to ensure the capacity and availability of the ICT provision for teaching and learning, administrative and management purposes of the school and NOT to be the sole ownership of the ICT Dept.
  19. I work in a special school with students at 11 - 19. As others have said, standard kit supplemented with a range of inclusive technologies to enable more independent learning. Equipment includes: touchscreens arrange of different switches / switch activated equipment communication aids light stimulation equipment sound beam interactive floor (OMi Vista) visualisers height adjustable interactive plasma displays (more accessible for some students in wheelchairs, although we do have some height adjustable SmartBoards) Also just purchased some Skoog's Then a range of software that can be used with either switches or touch screens (some of the software is very basic cause and effect). Due to the limited market for specialist equipment / software, special schools are faced with paying often ridiculous amounts of money for something that is very basic, but unfortunately essential in order to give all students equal access to the curriculum.
  20. Can the person that sent it not just recall the message. - beat me to it!
  21. Generally, if a student has a Statement of Educational Need then they are categorised as SEN. Areas of need The main areas of difficulty or need are set out in the SEN Code of Practice, Chapter 7. They are Cognition and Learning; Behaviour, Emotional and Social Development; Communication and Interaction; Sensory and/or Physical Needs. To give us more detailed information we have sub-divided some of these the broad areas into thecategories used by Ofsted. These are: A. Cognition and Learning Needs Specific Learning Difficulty (SpLD) Moderate Learning Difficulty (MLD) Severe Learning Difficulty (SLD) Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulty (PMLD) B. Behaviour, Emotional and Social Development Needs Behaviour, Emotional and Social Difficulty (BESD) C. Communication and Interaction Needs Speech, language and Communication Needs (SLCN) Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) D. Sensory and/or Physical Needs Visual Impairment (VI) Hearing Impairment (HI) Multi-Sensory Impairment (MSI) Physical Disability (PD) Other (OTH) This category must not be used when the pupil has a statement. If, after looking at Part 2 of the pupil's statement, you are unclear as how to record the pupil's needs please contact the LA who makes and maintains the statement for advice. This category should only be used for pupils at School Action Plus where it is not possible to identify the type of special educational need. With ongoing advice from the school's educational psychologist and other visiting specialist teachers, it is expected that schools should rarely have to use this category.
  22. I work in a school where Ramesys (now Capita) runs the ICT Managed Service. It has its good points and bad; I was fortunate in that I had a choice of whether to TUPE or not, I decided to stay as a member of SLT. Capita don't normally bring anyone from outside of the School, unless there are not enough staff to managed the service effectively (we are on a shared campus with 1000 pupils and 3 onsite engineers (was initially 4). I don't know of anyone that worked for Ramesys (Capita) that has been made redundant; the onsite engineers usually stay with the same school for at least a minimum period of time. I know two technicians that have gained promotion fairly quickly and as in any school they have periods when there are ups and downs. There is a lot of red tape, but this in the main is due to how the Local Authorities negotiate the contract. It can be difficult, but we have managed to remove many of the obstacles that we initially had with discussions with both the LA and Ramesys. I don't particlularly like the managed service concept, but on the whole the service they provide has been mostly good.
  23. About 12 cards, 7 bottles of wine, a 1 litre bottle of vodka, a load of beer and some nice glasses, chocolates galore, a frame with probably a Manchester United photo from a student, more ale off the headteacher and a partridge in a pear tree!!!
  24. It is quite low, however, it is recommended that most schools should be paying £90 per pupil. But that is why I mentioned about the level of service required, as it will vary from school to school.
