When do they start tattooing barcodes to the backs of your necks?

When everyone starts wearing hoods all time :)

This sound like the the for runner of the TIA (Total Information Access System) that was the mentioned in The Last Enemy that was on the bbc check out imdb.

It's worrying when id cards are applied to services as you card could be cancelled centrally and you will be denied access and there wont be much you can do about it.

i personally don't have a problem with id cards but why have them along with a driving licence, passport, national insurance card the list goes on.

Why not just combine the driving licence and passport with an ID card in one card?

One of the reasons behind the need for id card scheme is the government doesn't know how many people are in the country and who they are. it a fault of there own as they stopped counting people going out the country and counting them back in.

Because they have different functions and the more functions a document has the less secure it is.

More sensible would be to stop abusing driving licences as anything other than proof that someone has passed a driving test. The idea of a machine operators permit being used to prove ID really is rather daft.

In about two years "they" will get this information anyway, as has been done every decade since the mid 19th century...

That was taken from the real TIA - Total Information Awareness - A system in place in the US, that used to have the best logo, I think they've changed it now, but its still my VNC logo. These systems and plans have been in the making for longer than this government has been in place.

First you make it expensive, arkward, frustrating and invading. Then you ease the pressure with handy mergers with other state systems and everyone learns to love it.

do you really think people who aren't suppose to be here will fill out a census?

The largest population that overstay there visa are from australia and new zealand, as they not pummelled by the meadia like other minorities.

If a card had a single use are you going to carry 50+ cards?

If a driving licence only had transport related use then why aren't cars fitted with a device which require your driving licence to be inserted and then check to see if your not banned and the car is insured?

Get everyone to zap the cards, when they keep failing (& of course you don't know why) they will have to rethink. Get everyone to kick up a massive stink about the councils cards failing and you being charged for them. Ride a motorcycle, can get around most barriers at car parks and harder to charge for. Sawp cards with friends and family. Opps, I picked up my other halfs/room mates. Stuffs the data tracking. Complain to the OFT about the price hike & then discount. If shops do that it is illegal so can't be different for councils.

All sorts of fun and games :D

Any I bet you the data infrastructure will be easily hackable and everyone's data will get nicked and sold to the highest bidder by Russian hackers.

Only available to skilled East European hackers would be an improvment over the most likely level of security.

They are also unlikely to put themselves on the electoral roll or pay council tax. Or if they do they are just as likely to fill out a census form. Thus get one of these "privilege cards". Even without one they can just claim to be be doing a house swap when they visit the swimming pool or the "recycling centre".

How many people need to do 50+ things in a short period of time, if at all? The typical person might need some from a set of X.

The problem with a card which has 50+ functions is that someone can easily impersonate you to do various things you never do in your name without it being obvious. With this many possible functions there are going to be some which few people ever do.

Would it make sense for your front door key to also open your all the doors at work, bank safety deposit box, car. etc. etc.

The technology to do this has only become available fairly recently. Otherwise having a driving licence with a chip on acting as an additional key to a vehicle is a very sensible idea.
