The warp core doesn't power the ship, it only powers the warp engines AFAIK.

 

ALso, the film was superb. Best Star Trek by a long shot. And I thought Chekov was brilliant too, one of the better actors

 

Pine played Kirk well, with the right amount of arrogance mixed with bravery.

 

And Pegg was his usual comic self.

 

Roll on the next one!

 

Funnily enough I watched Galaxy Quest last night in which this sort of argument was put to bed, only to be ressurrected later.

Enjoyed the Star Trek film immensely. Couldn't believe 2 hours had passed so quickly.

I liked it overall, but I had three unresolved gripes:

1. Ridiculous lens flare, as previously mentioned
   
2. The monster chase on the ice planet served no purpose whatsoever to the plot
   
3. Spock's "Captain Exposition" scene when he explains the parallel universe point was painful to watch
   

 

the nero badguy was a bit of a rubbish baddy.

 

I also took issue with Nero being a weak antagonist, until I read an interesting blog post (which I can't find now, sorry) which posited that Nero is not the film's antagonist; Spock is. Both Kirk and McCoy are set at odds with Spock after the Kobayashi Maru hearing, and Kirk's real task in the movie is not defeating Nero, but taking command of the Enterprise (future Spock tells him as much: "To stop Nero, you alone must take command of your ship."). Furthermore, he must not only usurp Spock from the captain's chair, but also win him over so that he willingly assumes his destiny as first officer. Nero is the sideshow, and I found the film much more enjoyable when looked at from that perspective.

Film was great. Pegg and Chekov fitted the parts well but were odd choices and slightly strange in their approach. Also I felt old Nimoy was quite wooden in his acting almost which is really strange considering all the original films have been great.

 

I am very annoyed such a rubbish film such as Angels and Demons now beats it in the charts. Reviews between the two films are a big difference.

 

Roll on Star Trek - shame about the change of universe though (That annoyed me quite a bit)

agreed but this is a bit like batman begins, a good film but its not complete, its the introduction to the first film rather than a first film, the story was less of a story than a reason to redevelop old characters, now this is done they can have more in depth stories.

like the first chapters of books you learn about the character and motives then the story develops afterwards.

I (very vaguely) remember an episode of Voyager - where B'Elanna Torres jumped out of a ship for an orbital freefall. Ok, it was done in the holiday deck, but it was the same as Kirk's jump onto the mining platform!
