Dhcp secondary scope

We have added a new scope to dhcp, as we have just ran out of adresses on the old range but stuff around the network does not seem to be picking up any of the new range is there a button or option i need to set up so it moves over if there are no adresses left on the first range?

have you authorised the scope you can do this by right clicking on the scope and clicking authorise scope

.. but seriously, you can have it disabled.

 

We have various DHCP scopes on some of our servers, I have no idea how they work out which to run, but I suspect it is to do with a) some clever thing in the router configs, b) the fact that we haven't filled up the wired ranges yet means they don't get to the wireless ranges.

please post your scopes with ip addresses and subnetmasks so we can look if subnetting is a problem.

We can Give static addy's out of the 2nd range and they work fine, DHCp is just not giving adresses out from the 2nd range.

 

1st range

 

10.4.108.71

 

10.4.111.200

 

255.255.252.0

 

 

2nd range

 

10.4.224.1

 

10.4.231.253

 

255.255.248.0

 

Both ranges show as **Active**

How long are the leases set for?

 

Have you tried a ipconfig /flushdns then /registerdns, /release, /renew to force the clients to pick up new IP's from the DHCP server

They are both set for 7 days...

 

 

The 1st range is at 0% avalible addys, i assume the clients should just take a new addy from the new 2nd pool?

Is the new scope on the same server or a different server? If it's a different server then as a recommendation, set it up as a DNS server also, then add the server to the list of DNS servers within DHCP, under 006.

 

Reboot a workstation and from a command prompt type ipconfig /all and both DNS and any external DNS servers should show up.

The ranges are both on the same dhcp server.

I think your DHCP server is setup to be on subnet 1 and I suspect that the rest of your PCs are on that subnet.

I can think of two options...

Setup a router (or routing switch) to seperate your network into two subnets, then the router can pass DHCP requests for the second subnet to your DHCP server.

Setup the second subnet directly on your DHCP server - ethier with a VLAN on one NIC or use another NIC.

 

Watch yourself when doing this - things can get a bit ... er messy...

We installed another Nic, then gave that an ip addy off the 2nd range, and now lease's are being taken out on the new range.
