m1ddy Posted May 6, 2009 Posted May 6, 2009 Afternoon Guys, Can someone suggest a decent 1GB switch for use with 2 x SUN servers and 2 x 7110s. Each server has 4 nics and each 7110 has 2 so thats at least 12 ports need so Im learning towards a 24 port switch in case we add more hosts later. Would prefer HP but open to suggestions. Does the backplane speed need to be massivly fast? Thanks!

Just to warn you the 7110's have 4xgigabit NICs and 1x management NIC for the integrated lights out management (iLOM), as do most of the Sun Servers I believe. So if you want out of band management etc you're probably looking at 20 ports for the 4

Pretty sure you can get some good deals on Cisco stuff for education. Try find a school\lea that is a Cisco Academy and asking them about discounts.

cookie_monster Posted May 8, 2009 Posted May 8, 2009 I know that Cisco is held in high esteem but HP switches are used in loads of data centers around the world. I've read articles with data center admins that say they have never had a HP switch fail on them. I've also never had a single issus with a HP switch. How bad can they be? How much do fiber modules cost for a Cisco are they more than HP as well we need four of them as well?
matt40k Posted May 8, 2009 Posted May 8, 2009 I've yet to see a major DC use anything but Cisco, unless it's Extreme Networks, Juniper, Brocade. With that said I have seen HP at the edge (where a Cisco 3000\2000 series would normally be) in some less "ISP" grade "DCs" I've heard Cambs LEA say they had a number of issues with Cisco kit and they had trouble RMA it, thus why that have HP.
