we have to get three quotes for everything we order these days. The problem Ive found is that you get what you pay for!!!!!!!! we have had a company called astec computing who did a lot of work for us however one cabinet nearly fell off the wall, had cat5e installed over 100m and smart-boards installed at angels. however when we started using them they were good but over time the work became worse.

I think there is some stupid Health and safety thing that states you need insurance if your working over a Meter and a half otherwise I would do the projectors However we have done loads of smart-boards ourselves, which is really easy. I think we had a quote for £500 installation fee for a smart-board which is crazy for how easy it is!!

Thanks for the recommendations I will contact "solutionsav" for a quote However I have had problems with Cavendish Communications before not supplying test results or physical topology diagrams. they also left points dead and left us to the last week of the holidays before me contacting them when they were going to come in. Hey mate just bought CA Threat manager from Misco for 5.7k for 1000 licenses so cheap compared to what i could find from Sophos. the setup it more confusing however i believe its more of an enterprise product compared to sophos. James

What you have just described is how nearly all small to medium sized networks are built its called a collapsed core. enterprise network use the full three layer hierarchical model with access, distribution and core layers. access layer devices provide the port count and is composed of L2 switches distribution layer devices provide acl's, qos and route summirzation is made of routers or multilayered L3 switches core layer provides fast access between the different distrbution layer routers. very high spec multilayer switches and routers. the collapsed core desgin combines the distrbution and core layers in to one. just because a network is collapsed core network does not mean that Procurve is the correct solution in every network. schools and colleges also vary hugely in size!!! so a different solution is needed for each!

I still don't think you getting what i am saying. the requirements of the network have to be looked at first before just shouting vendor names. and also technically if your going on price 3com actually work out much cheaper than Procurve for often the same features and more.

Currently I think you are correct however with voice and video I think Cisco are going to become far more attractive. many schools and college don't seem to have a clue about building LAN's and often create huge broadcast domains with no way of controlling security or broadcasts. which is why i think its more important to look at the requirements first and get a good design before just randomly saying X vendor is the best BUY BUY BUY. if your looking at VoIP for the future it makes a huge amount of sense to have your phones the same vendor as the network. so when it all goes wrong there's only one person to blame.

yea i agree the market competitiveness is important i think each solution is good in its own environment. I was just pointing out its not as simple as just pick a vendor and run with it. need to look more at the requirements of the organization.

I think the conversation is a bit pointless until you specify some more details such as: -the size of the network (how many nodes) -are you currently running or planning to run voice and video e.g QoS requirements -what sort of data applications your using - how redundant the network needs to be - what kinds of security features needed in place e.g are you planning NAC or 802.1x - what are you planning on the wireless front e.g manged wireless system such as aruba - what you feel most comfortable managing also the quote below is rubbish as Procurve are not the market leaders. Cisco currently own the largest market share of switching. Procurve stuff is good but just not as good as Cisco, but you get what you pay for!

I think 3com lost a lot of trust when the randomly pulled from the enterprise market however all depends on what you want to do! and also what you feel most comfortable with if your buying a cisco voip solution makes scene to buy a cisco network

You will still be wasting a lot of bandwidth on broadcast traffic slowing your network!

I would highly recommend connecting your servers at 1gbps as well as subnetting your network e.g VLANS I believe its recommended to start subnetting when your reach around 100 nodes. I take it you have a flat network with no subnets?

If you are looking to a cisco voip system it makes sense to buy a cisco network.

How about a Cisco Catalyst 3560G-24TS £2273.68 inc VAT at uk.insight.com for something as critical as a SAN Switch, Cisco support is far better!

I though POE uses the extra 4 unsed core's so it dose not effect any non POE device! James

hi carlday You do not want to clear the Mac address table as its used to forward frames to the right port! Mac address however should age out of CAM when not used. As for your switch configuration you may want to configure VLAN (subnet your network) and some kind of anti loop feature such as STP VLAN's are usually recommended to break up your broadcast domain and save bandwidth! how large is your network (e.g how many nodes)?

Hello all where is this switch to sit in your network (core or access?) and also how large is your network? I have been using GNS3 on the mac for a while. I believe you have to have Xcode installed and use the Macports project!

We seem to have the same problem with wireless clients not receiving DHCP Ive found they seem to work if you give them a static ip address though! I think the problem for us maybe the layer 2 broadcast size of our network!
