Paper Recycling

G'day all.

We've just had 4 pretty big bins donated to us for scrap paper. Only thing is nothing's been organised as to who is going to collect/recycle this paper when they're full.

Anyone 'ere have scrap paper collection?

All waste paper is recycled here, the local council collects the recycling weekly.

Do your local council offer a recycling service? Ours uplift our recycling every week, there's a recycle box in each room and (in theory) the caretaker empties them into the main bin.

 

We did go for about a term in an IT room without recycling, the amount of paper thrown away was ridiculous.

Looks like the council should be picking it up then. We're solihull MBC here.

Also went an half term without chucking it away. The build up was mental.

About 1/2 gets collected by the council, and Dove Recycling the rest.

We have a local company come fortnightly to collect all paper and card... free!

The council collects it from here after our School Environment team (group of about 4 or 5 lads) walk around the school once per week and empty the green recycle bins into big green sacks.

 

We have around 40 around the school for them to empty so it keeps them busy.

Paper recycle bins in every room including all offices, staffroom and IT room. Caretaker and cleaner empty them on a regular basis. Local authority collect, along with bottles, plastic, card, textiles and of course food. There are separate bins for all of that and something is collected every week, round trip of a fortnight.

We have a thing that looks like a TARDIS that our paper goes into. It's emptied when it's full. The eco-committee (kids) go around the school daily collecting the paper waste and putting it in the bin. Seems to work but the cleaners are the worst for putting the paper in the landfill bins!

The council are actually pretty good in that we can put paper, bottles etc all into the SAME bin - they do the splitting at their end.

 

At home, in a different local authority, they have a right mardy about it and you have to put it in a specific box yourself...

When I first moved outwith Yorkshire I found that, if I said something like "you're in a right mardy!" everyone would look at me as if I was talking in a foreign language. It was only then that I realised it wasn't a nationally known term!

Council doesnt do ours - dont think it does business or schools

 

We use some local recycling company - bin in every room and then sacks are taken to a special bin area once a week.

Im always a bit sceptical how well it gets done because a certain caretaker will always take the easy way out so I cant be sure he doesnt just throw them in the skip.

And how does the recycling company deal with kids inevitably puttinf crisp packets etc in the bins?

 

Anyone have alu can or plastic bottle recycling at their school? I dont understand why they dont do it here. Cans not so much as they dont sell them now but bottles they do so it seems wasteful

I've not encountered mardy as a noun before, i.e. "being in a mardy", but do use it as an adjective, i.e. "a mardy person" or "he got a bit mardy".

 

Back on topic (!), our local council collect our recycling (papers, card, plastic bottles, drinks cans) once a fortnight (I think - certainly, it is fortnightly for residential collections) and then they sort it out. We have separate bins in every room, and the cleaners empty them when doing the rubbish bins. It did take a bit of encouragement before they stopped emptying them both into the same bag, but once they were used to the system, it worked fine.

To elaborate on earlier answer:

 

Of my three schools, one is an eco-school, I think we achieved the level where you get to keep the award permanently. Every room has two bins, a rubbish bin and a paper bin. The kids from eco-club come round every night and collect the paper and put it in a room near the skips, when a lot has built up the caretaker moves it all to the paper recycling skip, which the council collect every week (I think).

Yep we have a bin for just about anything. Alu, plastic, glass, print cartridges...etc

Toner cartridges are picked up by our toner supplier and recycled.

We have a lot of trees on site, recently a few had to be cut down, we chipped them and put them into the nature reserve.

Nothing is wasted
