Thanks, I realised it required an HD receiver, I was looking at them in Maplins. I heard a whisper that the Beeb are looking at the possibility of HD over Freeview but then I would still need a new receiver.

Has anyone installed their own dish etc. using Maplins (or a n other) kit?

Last I heard the space being freed up as the Analogue channels are being switched off is being auctioned off for HD content. First Freeview HD channels are unlikely to start broadcasting, and then in selected areas, until next year. So there's a bit of a wait yet for Freeview HD. FreeSat seems to be the best option at the moment for HD content without paying BSkyB £££'s.

On a side note, we just bought 'Planet Earth' on B-Ray for £15. I knew the series was good on standard TV, but you really ought to see it in B-Ray quality! Immense! :D

BBC HD and ITV HD are Free channels (after the cost of dish installation and FreeSAT Receiver etc).

As mentioned they are also "free" if you already have a $KY HD+ Box (ITV HD requires latest EPG update, and the channel needs to be added manually. You will also get C4 HD).

FreeSAT uses the same satellites (Astra 28.2E and Eurobird 28.5E) as $ky.

There are various ways of getting FreeSAT / HD depending if you already have an existing satellite dish setup for $ky at your home or not.

FreeSAT will only show FTA (Free To Air) programmes, hence why having a $ky Receiver will have more free channels (as they also show FTV (Free To View Channels), which are encrypted)

Check out following website for further info:

Also, if you haven’t already got a dish and you want FreeSAT (HD) check out my post here

I went for the $ky Pay Once offer, as it was a cheapest way of getting a dish installed with quad LNB to allow connection to my $ky SD Receiver and FreeSAT HD TV. Also got a 48cm portable dish in the garden for HotBird 13.0E and Astra 19.2E etc.

I had normal sky, and plugged my hd freesat box in and worked just fine.

Shame there's only two HD channels. Well I say two its the bbc hd channel, and only some itv.

I'm sitting here steaming at having bought the Comag SL100HD thinking it was a freesat receiver and now realise that freesat and fta are not the same thing. Is there anything I can do to get the BBC and ITV freesat channels on my receiver? It says they are scrambled when I try a "find" for them. Please help!
