Has anyone found away of running this with out giving the user local admin rights?

What was the problem? I had it installed on a suite for a while and no-one reported any problems (which doesn't mean there weren't any!).

There should be a network install for this. If you have version 3.01 (i think..) you should be able to install it and point it to a network share for all the data. You do need to set this on each machine but if you're imaging them then it should be an issue.

If you don't have a network install then give them a ring and they'll send you a updated version on cd.

I have done the network install that came with the version 3 cameras, works in a fashion, but it forgets where the network drive for the share is each time. Tried to find out where it stores this value to no avail, even setting it and then locking the profile. Asked the suppliers (TAG I think it was) and they said it was a bug but they hope to modify the software as they have the source code now. Anyone else come across this?

I used the network install option and i created a vbs script

P drive is a shared drive that all users have access to, the digital blue folder is hidden.

This adds the line above into the network configuration tab when you run the digital blue setup wizard.

 

to create the network install i first created the msi by creating an admin install from the setup exe and then creating and mst which changed the property NETWORK_INSTALL to YES, this is found in the Property table.

 

There may of been a way to add the shared folder into the msi itself but i could never find it.

Sorry didnt put enough detail in yesterday

Its version 2.0 havent come accross any disks for ver 3 but will keep an eye out,

 

When you run as a normal user i.e a student, you get the msg along the lines "you need administrator permisions to run digital blue....." its not the normal lack of access msg.

adding the user to local admins fixes the problems but Im not happy about doing that

 

not at school today so can not give the exact error msg

all my students are in a group on the server called "Plums" and i added that group to all the local computers Power users to fix this problem and it fixed the Ez GPO problem

 

i did it using GPO on 2008 server

I have just had the same problem with digital blue movie maker 3.

 

I have had to give students and staff modify permissions on the programs folder that the program is installed in with group policy.

for digital blue version two i give all users 'special permissions' to the 'digital blue' folder in program files, it works fine here, but i need to test it more with a fresh install of XP sp3

Version 2 is awful software and not worth you spending your time on. Pick up another camera (£89) and use version 3.

 

You can point the Network install to a share and it will create a folder for each user within it. Not fantastic, but a big step up from previous incarnations.

 

Version 3 is also network licensed, version2 is not!

 

Version 3 has certified PNP drivers for all versions of the cameras, version 2 does not if i remember correctly

I had a similar nightmare with V2, in the end i had to install it on the staff laptops, but once i found out that the newer Digital Blue had a V3 software which i could deploy i shot that out, and with the vbs script i wrote, users can log on any pc and connect the camera and docking station up, and they will be able to save there videos and access them from any pc as they are all on a shared drive.

any one got an iso of the 3.01 software that could be made available to me i have just bought 16 camras delivered today and they all have version 3.00 I could scream, wouldn't normall ask like this but need to get them installed by en of the week and can't wait for digiblue to send me the cd thanks

v2.1 had certified drivers

 

older versions i either had to connect a camera to every usb port on every pc or give local admin rights.

 

i hate the fact newer versions of the software dont seem able to handle old cameras how hard would it be for them to add drivers for older cameras as i have some schools where they hace all 3 versions of the camera its a nightmare they keep swapping the cameras round

 

ive not even looked at moving the videos off the c drive but i will have a look at that vbs posted at some point
