As we break up a week earlier than most and get 3 weeks off (poor teachers) I have managed to start cabling earlier than usual.

 

I have currently used a full real of cable and 60+ metres of cat5... oh and used my lovely new SDS drill to drill through 80cm thick walls I love the holidays.

 

Now I have just got to work out how to fit the Sanyo short throw projectors to the crumbly walls

A full real is 320 Meters any less you have been had.

 

And i would be putting no less then cat 6 in.

 

Like i have, so i can do GIG and POE with no problems.

And Cat 7 for 10GB back bones between hubs and servers.

No, a full reel is of whatever length it's sold... buy a fifty meter reel, you'll get fifty meters of cable.

I thought it was 305metres but nevermind, maybe I've been missing 15m all these years.

A standard box of cable is 305m.

I think it might be 304.8m - historically, the reels were 1000 feet so I reckon that it will still be that long. Not sure how much the odd 20cm matters (and no sniggering at the back!)

Why cable yourself when there are companies out there who will install twin data ports for a mere £60. When you work this out it may take them 3 - 4 hours depending on the run so that works out to be around £15 - £20 per hour. If you on the other hand have 4 twin data ports to install it could take you longer which would in effect cost more overall, when you could be getting on with more crucial work which begs the question why DIY.

I have to say when factor in cost of time getting people into to do cabling makes more sense.

 

A good example I heard today.

 

"You might be able to rake leaves in your yard and do it in 15 mins. It might take local kid 30 minutes. While in time it is quicker for you to do it. Problem is while you are doing that you not doing something else that no one else can do it"

 

So be blunt I rather pay someone do cabling so I can be focusing on other things.

 

Anyway just lugged boxes to IT Room ready for next week well tomorrow as we start moving computers around from lunchtime.

I do it because I enjoy it and its nice to have a break from sat at a computer all week, I always do the cabling here except when we have a full refit then the sparky does it.

 

Love to see a firm run cables around our school for £60, everywhere needs trunking and there are loads of angles per room to sort out.... its not cost effective.

 

I was going to put CAT6 in but didn't want to at this time, its a personal choice.

But it is not cost effective when you measure the time spent doing the job yourself against your pay per hour and that which a company charges.

It may be personal preference for you but it is costing your school more money and effectively you are paid by us the taxpayer so we would expect good value for money.

I am not saying that you personally are not effective at what you do and I don't mean to imply anything but given a scenario of say 20 double data ports for a computer suite I would say the company I use would have that done in maximum 2 days whereas If me and my technician was to do the job it would probably take a week approx.

the fact is 20 X 60 = £1200 for company to do it and 37 X 2 X 18 = £1332 X 2 which is the time spent not doing anything else = £2664.00.

 

You can see my point hopefully and do not take it the wrong way this is business sense nothing personal.

I find its pretty hard to get anyone in to do a small number of points, I was quoted just over £1k for 8 points(in the same room with dado trunking all round) plus an uplink for our DT lab(in the basement of one of our buildings), the lowest quote I had was around £600 so me and the site manager did it ourselves... think it came to around £250 including a few extra tools, a patch panel and some external cat5(I already had a few boxes of cable left over by some previous contractors).

The private school point is so important... it ups the cost of evrything by 15% automatically as we have to pay VAT unlike our state school counterparts

We do all cabling ourselves except fibre, or any stupidly big projects (e.g. putting 70 points in a new computer room within a week). Experience with our local contractors isn't the best, we've found they cut corners - 2 years ago they put cabling in about 20 classrooms, most of that has had to be repaired in some way (vandalism isn't that bad in our school, other ports have been fine).

 

Although yes, if there is other stuff to be done and limited time then IMO it makes sense to get them in.

Unless its a full IT Suite or fibre. we tend to do it ourselves here too.. Normal CAT5e/6 runs are done by our sparky - fibre runs by another company (NorComm IIRC)

I've changed my mind, get people in

 

I only had one full reel and all but one cable doesn't work. I did rush and do it on Friday but the cables seem fine. Going to buy myself a tester and check the cables when I am back in next week. Can't believe the reel was faulty but you never know.

 

Really wanted to finish this work on Friday so I had a week playing with Sharepoint and tidying up my office. ho hum

Well I've had a fun day. Hired the ICT Suite out to the Guides Association so I was able to come in and claim overtime. Managed to get loads done that I would normally do unpaid. and they left the place spotless.

my sentiments exactly. If i wanted a job where i sit at a screen all day, save for the odd trip to the water cooler or the office copier, then i'd have no problem finding a job to reward me for being a serious IT person.

 

As it is, i love getting my drill out from time to time and getting my hands dirty. so good for you.

 

and then you go on ruin it, by giving up. wimp. ;0) i know what you mean though....sometimes it's just easier to get someone in if the job becomes less about variety and more about hassle.

Damn you, you've just proved bossman's point!

 

Have done the odd few points.. but don't make a habit of it. It really isn't cost effective when it all goes tits up.

Tend to do all my own work, much easier for me to do it and breaks up the other work we have to do Also going to do my own fibre work as pre-terminated stuff is cheap enough now and if your careful which I will be having dealt with it before it should be good

They're very efficient, I've had them do quite a lot of work in the 8 months I've been at the school, jobs that would have taken me weeks are completed by them in a few days to a good standard, and the best bit is that all the work is tested and guarunteed for 15 years by the company, so any problems they come back and fix it! They also give me a copy of the teste data for my records.
