Little-Miss Posted March 31, 2009 Posted March 31, 2009 No, i'm not swearing, it really is beeping. I posted a while back that i'd had an on-screen warning about the battery but now it's started beeping. Is battery failure imminent or will it last a little longer? Good thing its only a quiet beep. The roar of the fans trying to cool the place down hides it well!
ICT_GUY Posted March 31, 2009 Posted March 31, 2009 The battery is dying, basically if the power dies, your server might not have any time to shut down. If the battery is dead enough and the server hungry enough the power could die the second the electric goes off. Best to order a replacement asap, a lot easier than replacing Hard Disks and reinstalling your server. 1
kmount Posted March 31, 2009 Posted March 31, 2009 It depends what the beep means of course, but I'd be replacing it as a matter of course given even if the battery is in a bad state now I doubt it'd shut down in enough time cleanly if a power cut occurred. 1
Sylv3r Posted March 31, 2009 Posted March 31, 2009 I would think if its been on the display and is now starting beeping it would be in your interest to change it ASAP. What is running on the UPS - is it an important server etc? Its probably not worth the risk with the battery in that state. Order a replacement battery or UPS, schedule some down time and swap it over as soon as you can.
Little-Miss Posted March 31, 2009 Author Posted March 31, 2009 Cool. Back to the head i go tomorrow....please sir, can i have some more... Bit nervous about changing the battery. I think the APC shell is pretty newish, well 4 years anyway so it's probably cheaper to replace the actual battery. Hate messing with things like that....

Just follow the instructions and you'll be OK. Note especially the bits about what to disconnect and when 1

The only problem with changing the battery is that they can swell. If this has happened, it may be impossible to get the old battery out. What I would do is arrange some time where you can shut down the server then unplug the UPS and try to remove the battery. If it comes out easily then replace it, if not then get a whole new UPS. One other thing - not sure what size UPS you've got but if it's the APC 2200 then the battery is heavy (it's made of lead!) so you might want someone to help if you've got to move it and you'll definitely need someone to help fit the new one.

I think the APC shell is pretty newish, well 4 years anyway so it's probably cheaper to replace the actual battery. Hate messing with things like that.... I'm having the same qualms about my UPS. Instead of trying to figure out which battery I needed I just bought another unit, rather larger one this time though. I have yet to fit it and not looking forward to that much with two servers to deal with. Maybe I just power down one first, get that running on the new UPS, wait awhile then do the other. (but not tomorrow)
Little-Miss Posted March 31, 2009 Author Posted March 31, 2009 I may do some pricing and see if its worth replacing the battery or just buying another unit..
Little-Miss Posted March 31, 2009 Author Posted March 31, 2009 The battery can swell!?!?! when i say nervous. I mean nervous about the battery, not the fact that i cant do it....i've just got this thing about big batteries like that......how wierd am i?!

ICT_GUY Posted March 31, 2009 Posted March 31, 2009 APC battery change is usually as simple as disconnecting from the mains, pulling the front panel off, pulling the old battery out and pushing the new one in. As jobs go its a no brainer. Theres nothing dangerous, or scary to do, no screws or anything difficult at all. 1
plexer Posted March 31, 2009 Posted March 31, 2009 must be the season for ups batteries to die. I've got to change the one in my rackmount 700va.
Curt_LFC Posted March 31, 2009 Posted March 31, 2009 Be prepared for a battle to take the old battery out as they tend to swell up a bit when they are old and can be a pain.
Little-Miss Posted April 1, 2009 Author Posted April 1, 2009 *Little Miss imagines big swollen, bulging leaky battery....* I'm ignoring everyone and listening to ICT_GUY *lalalalalalalalala*
WStore_Dan Posted April 1, 2009 Posted April 1, 2009 Which UPS is it? We have a few batteries in our clearance section. Basically, they've been opened or the customer has ordered the wrong item and they've come back to us but they are all new and a fraction of the standard price *CLEARANCE* BR24BP APC Back-UPS RS 1500VA Battery Pack - for BR1500I *Has Been Opened* *Buy While Stocks Last* - £50.00 (1 availalable) CLEARANCE* APC Replacement Battery - For APC Smart-UPS SU700RMI2U / SUA750RMI2U (Has Been Opened) (While Stocks Last) - £60.00 (1 available) *CLEARANCE* Smarts-UPS Extended Run Battery Pack - For SU2200XLINET - *While Stocks Last* *Has Been Opened* - £78.00 (3 available) Prices are exclusive of VAT but inclusive of delivery Many thanks! 1
plexer Posted April 1, 2009 Posted April 1, 2009 In all the ups battery swaps I've ever done I've never had a problem or encountered a swollen battery. Ben 1
Little-Miss Posted April 1, 2009 Author Posted April 1, 2009 Thanks Dan, i just gotta go and see what model it is... I'm also only listening to Plexer lol!
Little-Miss Posted April 1, 2009 Author Posted April 1, 2009 Just found a video.....peice of pi.....e
tsky Posted April 1, 2009 Posted April 1, 2009 Depending on the age of your unit, capacity of the battery and suchlike it might be cheaper to go and buy a new unit Just don't short any of the terminals on your hands or arms... you'll get a hell of a burn mark! Just took one of ours apart as battery so dead it won't fire up the charge circuitry... more than the unit's worth to change the damned thing, so I'm ordering some nice rack-mount 3000VA units when the budget comes through. Whatever I get it'll still never be as good as the 6 foot high APC 3-phase 30KV system I had at my last job.. every part interchangable and manual bypass mode available for replacing the inverters. Ho hum.
Little-Miss Posted April 1, 2009 Author Posted April 1, 2009 Right my UPS is a APC Smart-UPS 1000, model SUA1000i. Anyone know of a good alternative or somewhere to get a decent priced battery. Is this an original APC or an alternative? UPS Batteries > APC > Buy a cheap Smart UPS SU1000i from MDS Battery
srochford Posted April 1, 2009 Posted April 1, 2009 In all the ups battery swaps I've ever done I've never had a problem or encountered a swollen battery. Ben I wouldn't say it's common; I've only had it happen once and it was a real nightmare (in the end I think we just bought a new UPS and kept the spare battery to use in the next one which needed it.) If you have several UPS which are the same it's no big deal to have a spare battery. If you've only got one then buying a battery and finding you can't fit it is a pain and a waste of money!
button_ripple Posted April 1, 2009 Posted April 1, 2009 APC have a tool to see if it is cheaper to get a new battery or a new UPS APC UPS Battery Replacement & Upgrade Selector It is slightly biased towards getting a new UPS instead of a new battery, but what do you expect?? I need to buy new batteries, 1 for a Smart-UPS 1000 and 1 for a Smart-UPS 620
Curt_LFC Posted April 1, 2009 Posted April 1, 2009 Maybe i was just unlucky because the 2 that i have ever replaced have both been a pain to remove.
