PDA's for registration in SIMS

Does anyone use PDA's in SIMS for registration and/or assessment data?

Which ones do you use, which would you recommend?

Why not kill two birds with one stone and put mid-range PCs in every classroom? Bigger screen, and they can use it for Teaching and Learning purposes as well. Faster, harder to steal, more functional, and drive any future IWBs you may get.

Because (from prima facie evidence here at any rate) they're not as shiny...

 

We broke our necks building and deploying PCs in every classroom last summer holidays, specifically for eReg. For the most part, they're not used. Oh, but it'll all be different when we get the PDAs...

 

I'm starting a sweepstake on when we get the first one returned as faulty having fallen out of a trouser pocket and into the loo

We are getting 3 for the PE staff to use, i've put an order in for 3 hx2490's and they should be here soon. We'll be using them with Pars .net using the pocket pars program and the PE staff will be able to record results from activities then sync wirelessly when they get back to their office.

 

I'll let you all know how it goes when the PDA's arrive.

 

 

@Webman, we've already got the mid range PC's in every classroom for Pars and Sims .net. All staff seem to use these PC's for their registers at the moment and the PE staff can't wait to use the PDA's.

 

Lets hope that one doesn't get dropped down the loo.....

I have had PARS.net working on my MDA. I did it just out of interest and it was fairly painless but i really wouldn't want staff to be using this. Strikes me as an easily lost/broken/stolen white elephant.

We are actually costing this now for the PE department. Using Dell Axim PDAs (624MHz) and QinetiQ software.

 

Looking good so far. More portable, good battery life, good wireless and the ability to carry office documents and browse the web etc. Seems like a nice balance between laptops and desktops.

Did Qinetiq mention anything about porting their app to desktops / laptops? I spoke to them a few weeks ago and they are considering it, but need the additional push.

We're issuing PE staff with £20 PAYG mobiles - they call in absences per lesson

 

Not that we had any inflence over the descision, but the IT Co-Ord has one for school and I have my own personal one. I find it more of a novelty that you can open office files and browse the web - I've only used these when desperate - like abroad/ on holiday.

Wasn't there a problem with security on the sims via wireless connections?

I seem to remember Bromcom having a rather large disagreement with Capita over this.

It may have been resolved but if anybody knows different i would like to know.

Not to me- but then I have *only* asked about their PDA connection software, and we have been working with them on that basis. I could dig around if you like.

If you wouldn't mind - we really like the app here, but it would need to run on laptops as well and they're deciding how soon they're going to port it.

 

For those of you getting PDAs in, are these in addition to Teacher Laptops or instead of?
